The Shabti watched from the alley, the ticking of its clockwork heart echoing off the walls. The Medjai were still picking through the remnants of the riot, interviewing whatever witnesses they could find. The unfortunates spoke of the Ounam and the English girl, and the woman with the large gun.
It had been simple really. No sooner had the English girl stepped off the airship when she was separated from the Construct that came with her. After that, the Shabti had followed her through the streets of the city. All it had to do was guide her to the woman called Simonetta Belzoni. Osiris-Ramesses had said everything else would fall into place, and it had.
And yet there was the other man, the one known as Hawk Ramsey. Osiris-Ramesses had said nothing of him. He looked like an Egyptian, but was not. The Shabti would have to ask what part he played in the grand plan.
Looking back, the Shabti saw the Medjai had let their latest witness go after he mentioned a boat. Realizing the perpetrators they were seeking were long gone, the two policemen lit up cigarettes and started talking of their domestic concerns, mainly what their wives had made for dinner the previous night.
The Shabti turned and started back through the alley. The English Girl and Simonetta Belzoni would make their way to another city, likely Sais, before moving south. The Shabti would keep pace with them. It would have plenty of time to catch up as they would likely find a place to sleep for the night. It was curious however, if Hawk Ramsey would go with them as well.
