I don’t want to stand here on the ground
Where people fight and yell and growl
I want to find a new world instead
One without yelling and fighting around
I want to escape the life I live
Full of pain, fear, and sorrow
I want to exist somewhere new
Full of butterflies and friends
I run to my room crying again
Running away from those around
Those who shout and those who hurt
Those that scare me so much
Then a kid about my age
Lands on my windowsill and tells me their name
“I am Alex.” they speak with glee, then pity
“I heard yelling here and came to see, Why do you cry?”
I whisper my thoughts to them quiet and meek
“I don’t want to be here with yelling and screams,
Where I have to be a perfect ‘girl’
When I don’t want to be one at all!”
They look at me with pity then gets an idea
“I’ll take you to me world far away from here
Where no gender rules exist and you can be you
whether that means a boy, girl, or neither!”
They reached out for my hand which I grabbed with glee
Then they led me to my window and said to believe
Believe we can fly to another world that is safe and warm
Then we jumped through the window high in the air
But we didn’t crash and hit the ground
I felt the air float around
We flew through the air excited and free
And we flew to a place perfect for me
Past the garden in the yard
Over the gate that held me in
Through the forest I wanted to travel
Then into the sky towards the stars
We find ourselves somewhere new
The kid tells me “Who do you want to be?”
And I wish with all my heart to look the part
Then look down at myself… and see it
The perfect person that I wanted to be so bad
Was looking back at me in my reflection
A person with no gender at all
Short hair, no dress, and tender eyes
A smile spread across my face
I had barely arrived and loved the place
I hug the kid that was my age and said
“Thank you Alex, For setting me free”
