Do you ever have those dreams in which you’re running from something and then you wake up, muscles aching, drenched in sweat, like your dream really did happen?
Makayla Johnson just found out that is really what happens. The hard way.
Makayla was just having a normal night, and then she fell asleep.
She dreamt that she was running in a sparse stretch of dead trees, fleeing from something. She didn’t know what it was; she only knew it would kill her if it caught her.
After what must have been ten straight minutes of running, Makayla started to slow down. Her breath was catching, her legs were aching, and her whole body was in pain. Though her brain screamed for her to keep going, Makayla couldn’t help it. She stopped dead and fell against a tree, her chest heaving. She checked her watch; it was 12:34.
In the few seconds she stopped, she could hear something large running towards her. It sounded like an animal of tremendous size, but it was moving far too fast for it to be a regular animal.
Makayla told herself to get up, but she couldn’t. And then it bounded into the clearing, and her heart stopped.
It was an enormous, hairless monster, with four bony, spidery legs and a head that was made of razor-sharp teeth. It screamed at her, and miraculously, Makayla managed to leap up and start running. But the thing was too fast for her. It eventually caught up to her and pounced.
Makayla woke up screaming. She was leaning against a bare tree. She checked her watch, and it was 12:33.
