Blake curved into a ball forcing his eyes shut. Images of the wolf haunted him. When they had reached the festival, a crowd had greeted them with judging eyes. Jaxon's girlfriend had been there and Blake could have sworn that he had seen a smirk on her face. He could see a drunk Aeron as well rushing through the crowd trying to find Jaxon who was not there. Leon had rushed towards him. He immediately grabbed his wrist. "Where is your bracelet?"
Blake had just shaken his head. He had left it in his room as he could clearly see that Jaxon had not liked it. "His leg is hurt," Alex had said and Leon had answered that he would find a healer. Why did they say, healer? Did they mean a doctor?
He had soon gotten his answer as a gentle elderly man came. His hands were warm and glowed with a bright light as the wound healed itself when he touched it. The elderly man had first not wanted to heal Blake but Leon had assured him that Blake was soon to be informed of the otherworldly at it might be easier for him to accept that world if he saw it do some good.
Blake opened his eyes and listen to the murmured voiced from the hall. He lies in his dorm room waiting for someone to give him answers. Preferably, before he went insane. If he wasn't insane already.
Then Blake heard a familiar voice. Hadrien's voice. He got on his feet and limped a few steps before he realizes that the wound really was gone and went over to the door. He opened to meet Alex, Leon, Principal Price and Hadrien in the hall. Hadrien was wrapped in a blanket while he was covered in dirt. Blake saw a twig in his hair and before he stops himself he had reached out to remove it.
Hadrien who was in a haze flinched. "Stop, don't touch him. He's a tad unstable-" Principal Price was interrupted when Hadrien pushed him away from Blake with a growl. He didn't stop Blake from removing leaves and twigs from his hair and seemed to calm down though his eyes were still on Price.
"Can't you keep your mutts in line. Aren't you suppose to be an alpha?" Leon huffed while keeping his eyes on Hadrien who hardly has spoken more than a few words since he got here. "That's bloody stupid, Leon. He is clearly new. A newly chosen has a hard time differentiating between his wolf and his human mind. The thing Blake seems to pet right now is very likely to be his wolf," Alex said but he didn't let Hadrien go with his eyes either. Most likely to ensure that he didn't snap at Blake.
"How am I supposed to know such a thing? I have not been chosen by an animal spirit," Leon said slowly.
"Then stop judging like you know everything. He defended Blake with his life on the line. Some bloody respect is in its place!"
"I would appreciate if you both be silent, Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Graycrest. Hadrien is still on edge and needs calm and quiet," Principal Price said and walk down the corridor to Hadrien's room.
"Are you okay, Hadrien?" Blake asked softly. He had ignored the others as what they said only made him more confused. Hadrien did not look at him but he still had the eyes of a wolf. He leaned on Blake and put his head against his shoulder without looking at him. Blake ruffled his hair.
"He seems fond of you," Leon said while frowning at the strange behavior.
"Yeah, it's weird. Normally a newly chosen would be hostile of everyone around them," Alex muttered and Blake could clearly see that the behavior disturbed him.
"Didn't you say that he turned to protect Blake. Has it something to do with that? Some leftover instinct from Hadrien," Leon suggested.
"Perhaps…"
Blake petted Hadrien and hummed gently to calm him. He was relieved he was back to human and wasn't seriously hurt even if he was still worried for his mind. Principal Price came back with a bag of clothes and his blanket and pillow.
"What are you going to do with him?" Blake asked worryingly and Principal Price smiled gently.
"I'm bringing him to my home where we can watch over him. I just needed some of his clothes and some of the things that have his scent. It will calm him down to be surrounded by his own scent."
Principal Price has begun to drag Hadrien away. Hadrien didn't want to leave first but after some encouragement from Blake, they left calmly.
"Can anyone speak to me? What the hell is going on?!"
"You better sit down for this," Alex mumbled and Blake sat down on his bed with a stubborn expression on his face. They will not leave this room without a decent explanation.
"Yeah, do you believe in the supernatural?" Alex asked while Blake frowned.
"Do I have a choice?"
"Fair point. Then what do you think the wolves were," Leon said gently.
"A werewolf? But there was no full moon tonight so-"
Alex was laughing until he had tears in his eyes.
"Better not let the wolves hear you. Humans really got the werewolves wrong."
"Then what are they?
Alex gasped for air and took some deep breaths before answering.
"We never really named ourselves. But shapeshifters may be the closest to our kind as we can come. At least a few of my kind calls ourselves shapeshifters."
"You're a wolf?"
"Don't insult me. I'm far cuter and you have seen my animal form."
Blake frowned and was just about ask when his eyes went wide.
"You're the cat!"
"The Asian golden cat. Yes. I and my mom are the only ones in Britain. We originally lived in India, China, and southeast Asia. My mom fell in love with a pale ass Britt and ran away from home. Took me to visit our family in China when I was eleven. I was chosen by one of our families cats."
"Chosen. You said that in the hallway as well."
"Yeah, we were once human like you until a spirit of an animal chose us and merged with our spirit, making us what we are today. A shape-shifter of a kind."
Blake looked at Leon who just shook his head.
"I'm no shapeshifter. I'm a witch. The Graycrest is infamous for being witches. We have some druids as well."
"Oh, witches. That makes sense. Probably a few vampires running around as well," Blake muttered and Alex shook his head with a smile.
"Vampires are a human invention. They come from bat shapeshifters. Though they do fancy calling themselves vampires just to differentiate themselves from other shapeshifters since they don't like them."
"Why don't they fancy their own kind?"
"To make a short story of a long one. Wolf and bat shapeshifters ruled Europe. Bat shapeshifters had magic, wolves did not. All shapeshifters banned the use of magic among themselves. Bat shapeshifters refused as magic was their biggest advantage. They became exiles among their own kind."
"So the war between werewolves and vampires in every movie ever-"
"Oh, they are based on some truth. You would be surprised by how many wolf and bat shapeshifters there are in Hollywood. You can easily see who are a wolf and who is a bat among those who created the movies. If the movie is sympathetic towards werewolves then the movie is created by a wolf shapeshifter and if the story is about noble vampires who fight barbaric werewolves then it was created by a vampire," Leon said and shrugged.
"Then are witches not allowed to use magic as well?"
"Shapeshifter disliked anyone who could use magic and had quite a few skirmishes with witches but we rule ourselves and we do not follow the law of shapeshifters."
Blake sighed and massaged his temples.
"Then how many is something… Nonhuman here on Vale academy."
"Pretty much everyone is some kind of supernatural at both Vale and Elan academy. You were one of the few humans here on Vale academy. Hadrien was human along with you. His family is wolf shapeshifters from a pack in France from what I heard, but he wasn't chosen by a wolf spirit from his pack so they send him here in hope that one of the wolf spirits in the Price pack would choose him. His family must be overjoyed by now," Alex said with a nonchalant shrug.
"Why am I here if this is a school for supernaturals?" Alex turned towards Leon who cleared his throat.
"I guess that's only something I can answer. Do you remember when you were thirteen years old? A group of Druids came through," Leon asked and seemed to watch his facial expression.
Blake remembered. He had just come out and had been beaten by a group of boys from his class. It was bad. He had a broken leg and several broken ribs as he lied in the middle of the street. No one helped him and just walked past by.
"I remember… I had been assaulted. I was seriously hurt".
"Do you remember how you got home?"
"I… Walked. I… No that can't be true. My leg was broken. How?" Blake frowned and rubbed his forehead. "Did the druids heal me? Like that old man earlier?"
"They came into town that day to help you. You called them. But when they got to you… You had already healed yourself. At least most of the wounds were gone and you walked home."
"I'm… Supernatural?"
"I don't know. You carry a lot of magic but we are not sure where it comes from. We made a blood test and you are human. No supernatural blood in your veins from what we can tell. But without a supernatural upbringing, you wouldn't be able to use magic."
"Wait. He has no magic scent on him," Alex exclaimed and Blake frowned in confusion. Can you smell magic?
"Indeed. You can imagine our surprise when we brought him here only to find out that he had no magic at all." Leon nodded in agreement.
"Then were you mistaken about me?"
"No, your paintings are imbued with magic. They show the otherworld".
"What's that?" Leon sighed at Blake's question.
"I… That is a very complicated question. To keep it simple. The otherworld is a world parallel with our own but it infused in magic. Gods and spirits walk that plane. Few have access to it."
"And I have?"
"Yes, the wolf spirit you saw. The one that entered Hadrien. It was in the Otherworld. You seem to be able to access the Otherworld with nothing but your mind. We have never heard of anyone or anything who could do that," Leon explained as Blake could feel his mind start to twirl around itself. This was too much.
"I think we might have overloaded him with too much information," Alex said with a cheerful voice.
"I agree. Why don't you rest for tonight and process this? There is no need to know everything tonight," Leon said farewell and left them in silence.
"Alex?"
"Yeah, Champ."
"The wolf that attacked me. Was he a Wolf shapeshifter?"
"Yeah. The only wolves in Britain are the shapeshifters."
Blake groaned and lay himself to rest wondering if he was dreaming or if this was just a manifestation of his insanity.
