Blake was fascinated by the size of the festival. There were multitudes of colors that all crashed with each other. The stands were too many to count and there was a funfair with plenty of rides. How and why did they have so much stuff in the middle of nowhere? Being rich must have plenty of advantages.
Alex pulled Blake along as they ate everything they could find and Alex pretty much flirted with everything that moves. Even an eighty years old lady who laughed at his shenanigans. When the pain was too much to bear then Alex carried him on his back while they rode some of the rides while eating ice-cream.
As the night arrived the stands close down and a big tenth lit up with a billion lights as the young started to dance as their parents had left for the night. Only a few teachers were there as chaperones. Blake spotted Coach Price drinking something from a small silver flask. He could only assume it wasn't water. Principal Price watched over the students and made sure they didn't do anything immoral.
Alex sat Blake down in a chair while giving him something to drink. It didn't take long before girls started to gather as Alex apparently was rather popular which actually surprised Blake. He assumed that the foul-mouthed goth wouldn't be popular but then again. Alex was unusually honest, straightforward and laid back. He danced with every girl who asked no matter personality or looks.
Most girls seem to avoid Blake though which he was grateful for as he didn't want to dance with his leg. At least not with them. He looked nervously around and soon lit up as he saw the one exception he had made for the dance. Jaxon moved towards him with the brightest smile he had ever seen him with. The music seemed to slow down as he came nearer.
"Blake, you came! How's the leg?" Jaxon said with a worried look as Blake most likely looked pale. Blake gave him a timid smile.
"I'm fine. No pain at all." It was a straight lie as the whole leg was throbbing but he couldn't care less as the prospect of dancing with Jaxon was far too inviting. Blake rose to his feet as smoothly as he could and took a step forward. He almost walked into a green-haired girl with green eyes. She gave Jaxon a smile and grabbed hold of his arm.
"Hello, hun. Did you wait long?"
"Jessie. No, not at all," Jaxon laughed as he kissed the girl with a bright smile. Blake felt the world slow down once again but this time because of another reason. He had a hard time breathing and his chest was painful. Girlfriend. How could he forget? How stupid was he? Blake felt tears burn behind his eyelids but forced a smile. The same smile he had given every time his parent had half heartily asked if he was okay when he was covered with bruises.
The girl, Jessie, turned towards him. She pulled her long hair behind her ear and gave him a smile. She was beautiful. The two of them suited to each other. A scrawny, pale farmers boy could hardly compare.
"Oh, who's this?"
"One of the newbies of the Art Guild. The one that got attacked by a dog."
Blake felt himself wince at the word dog. Jaxon had told him that he believed him.
"Oh, poor thing. It must be painful. Either way, let's dance."
"Of course, let’s go, Jessie."
The two of them left and Blake smiled at Jessie who gave him a last look as if making sure that he was watching them. He felt his smile waver as the pain inside his chest became too heavy to bear. He started to limp away from there. He just wanted to leave.
Blake had to push himself to the crowd and he got several annoyed looks which he ignored as he held back his tears. He's stupid! He knew Jaxon had a girlfriend. What did he expect? There were people all over the place and he felt like they stared at him. Judged him. He needed to be alone. So he went to the only place in which he could see was without people. The forest.
He keeps walking, feeling numb as the music slowly faded the further he walked. Blake felt tears fall from his eyes and he fell onto the ground when his leg couldn't handle the strain anymore. His wound had started to bleed.
"Blake!"
Blake looked up to see Hadrien rush towards him. Hadrien helped Blake up and Blake leaned on a tree while furiously trying to hide his tears.
"I saw you walk into the forest. It's not safe at night. Especially when you’re hurt," mumbled Hadrien awkwardly as he looked around trying to give Blake some privacy to dry his tears.
"I'm so stupid," Blake whimpered and Hadrien turned towards him.
"No. Just hurt." His words were reassuring but Blake could see that he wasn't talking about his leg.
"Let's go back and find Alex. It seems like you need a friend… Well, another friend," Hadrien smiled at him and Blake nodded weakly as Hadrien helped Blake steady himself.
They turned around to walk back when Blake froze at a familiar sound. A deep growl. Two golden eyes looked at them from the shadows. The night was too dark to allow a clear sight but as the creature slowly moved out into the moonlight, Blake could feel his heart beat faster.
A big black wolf with fearsome fangs and an angry presence. It was twice the size of any dog Blake had ever seen which only confirmed Blake’s suspicions. This was no dog. This was a wolf.
"Merde…" Hadrien hissed between his teeth while they both slowly backed away. The wolf growled as it followed them step by step. Blake whimpered as he stumbled and fell onto the ground.
"Blake!" Hadrien tried to drag Blake up but the wolf snapped at his hand and he backed away as the wolf put itself between them. Blake crawled away as he wanted to put as much distance between himself and the wolf as he could.
"Blake... " Hadrien looked at Blake before looking towards the way they came and back again. The wolf came closer as Blake's hands searched the ground. There…
"Hadrien… When I tell you…run," Blake said slowly as he pulled himself slowly up with the help of the tree. He held his arm behind his back.
"But-"
"No but. I will distract it. Go find help."
The wolf started to growl and Blake inhaled trying to steady himself. One. The wolf prepared itself to launch. Two. Hadrien met his eyes. Three. The wolf threw itself at Blake.
"RUN!!!"
Blake pulled out a thick branch. For a moment he saw all his bullies in the face of the wolf. He would not go down without a fight. With a swing made from every bit of strength he could muster, he hit the wolf. The branch broke and the wolf whimpered. Hadrien ran with all his might.
Blake had fallen towards the ground and waited for the wolf's attack now that he was defenseless. But the wolf merely furiously shook its body before running after Hadrien. Blake watched in horror as the wolf pushed Hadrien to the ground. It bit his arm as he screamed in agony.
"Leave him be!" Blake tried to crawl towards Hadrien but his vision had started to fail him as his own pain was excruciating. Blake grimaces as he pulled himself to a sitting position. He stared into a couple of amber eyes. A giant grey wolf with a scar over its right eye in front of him looked at him with serene eyes. The sounds of the forest seemed to vanish and he could only hear the grey wolf's breath.
"Help him…" Blake whispered. The grey wolf tilted its head before turning towards the black wolf and Hadrien. Slowly the time turned normal as the grey wolf walked over to the two struggling for their life. The grey wolf walks straight through the other wolf and into Hadrien.
Then time started again and Blake heard Hadrien let out a strange roar. It was somewhere between a human and an animal’s roar. Hadrien's eyes turned amber as his body slowly filled with grey fur and a scar manifested itself over his right eye. In a moment, Hadrien was gone and in his place stood a giant grey wolf with amber eyes.
It howls as the black wolf growled and black wolf backed away. The grey wolf was not kind enough to let it though as it threw itself at the black wolf.
"Bloody hell!" Blake snapped out of it by the sound of a familiar voice. He turned towards Alex who stared at the two wolf's fighting.
"Alex!" Blake sniveled and Alex's head snapped towards him. Blake shook in shock as Alex ran over and embraced him. Without much effort, Alex lifted him up in a bridal position. Normally, Blake would not be happy with it but he was in to much pain to care. He cried and put his arms around Alex's neck.
Two other people had entered the fray. Principal and coach Price had both entered the clearing and stared at the scene.
"What in fucking hell is going on?"
"Help Hadrien," Blake whimpered.
"Hadrien? Where? I cannot see the lad?" Coach Price scanned the clearing. Blake tremblingly pointed towards the grey wolf.
"Hadrien."
All of them turned to the two wolves.
"Fucking hell, is that Ironmaw? I have not seen that bastard in years," Coach Price said with a grin before frowning. "That's Hadrien?"
"Kai, stop gawking and help subdue the black wolf. I want it alive," Principal Price ordered.
"Yeah, Yeah! On it." Coach Price removed his clothes as he stepped forward and with a roar, he turned into a giant black wolf with a grey stripe at its chest. Its blue eyes glowed as it threw itself at the other black wolf. A few seconds of struggle later the black wolf with golden eyes retreated with the grey wolf and the black one with the grey stripe ran after it.
"God…" mumbled Blake who tried in vain not to whimper at the sight.
"Mr. Oakley…" Principal Price came closer and Blake's head snapped towards him.
"That's. No. Fucking. Dog!" Blake held back his anger as tears burned furiously in his eyes.
"No, I guess it was not-"
"Oh my god. Hadrien turned into a wolf. What have I done?!" Blake felt panic well up.
"Sorry, but this has nothing to do with you," Alex mumbled gently but Blake just shook his head in denial.
"I asked the wolf to help Hadrien! It jumped inside him and then… Hadrien turned into a wolf!"
"Which wolf?" Alex asked with a frown. Blake pointed at the direction the wolves had run.
"The grey one!"
"Peachy… Principal, can you make sense-" Alex stopped midsentence as he caught Principal Price's strange look. He stared at Blake with something close to disbelief and fear.
"Hey!" Alex's voice echoed in the clearing and Principal Price snapped out of it. "Take Mr. Oakley to safety. We need to catch that wolf."
"Roger that," Alex muttered and started to walk away under Blake's protests as Blake wanted to find and help Hadrien. Alex hushed him with the patience of a saint.
"There is nothing you can do, Champ. Leave it to the other wolves while we find you a healer." Blake whimpered but gave up as he leaned against Alex. What the hell was going on?
