The first thing Chiyo notices about the girl who answers the door is that she’s very pregnant.
“May I help you, honored guests?” Pregnant asks, hair pulled into a kerchief. Pregnant’s cheeks are like roses in snow and she’s smiling bright.
“Sorry to disturb you,” Chiyo apologizes, unable to tear her eyes from the girl’s belly. “My sister and I have traveled a long way. We were told we would be welcomed here.”
Pregnant’s eyes soften. “Of course, friends. You looked famished, poor dears! Come in, I’ll take you to meet the matron, and then we shall feed you lunch.”
