“Natsu’s pregnant.”
Chiyo stares.
“Eight weeks, at least.”
“She’s fifteen.”
“And will be a mother at sixteen, provided all goes well.” The doctor pats Chiyo’s shoulder. “I know you’re both unmarried. I have no intention of telling the other villagers, but the shogun’s court demands all new births be reported upon discovery of conception. I cannot hide it, then.”
“The villagers will tear her apart,” Chiyo says.
“There is a place in Kyoto that cares for unwed mothers. You can find work and your sister will be free from judgment there. Go; this is all I can do for you.”
