Episode 3 - Books
I need to be fast. Very fast. The little monster is hiding behind the mirror and I must catch him with all the speed I can muster. I place my paw gently to push the mirror, I take a deep breath…
"Wind!"
The mirror flies up to the ceiling with the magical gust, revealing the creature beneath. I quickly launch myself forwards, unsure of what the creature has become. But it has not changed at all, I find, as it stares at me. It only stands still, on the floor where the mirror had been, gazing at me with wide eyes. Not a dangerous monster-dog at all. It is silent, no longer making that dreadful sound… but rather laughing as, in my shock, I fly right over it and have to hastily flip onto all fours, again. Disoriented, I tumble out of a pile of books decimated by my fall.
I would not want to upset it again, so I chose my actions with care, standing and walking to the Trollfairy. Silence causes the padding of my paws to resonate through the room, pat pat pat, like a cautious drum. As I draw closer, it’s wide eyes blink curiously. Lips parting, it inquires...
“Are you my Meow?”
Meow? Am I supposed to know what he means, rather than wondering what his intention is? Since it came from my Secret Elixir, am I the Meow it asks of? I have never gone by a name other than my title of The White Sorceress… But to be a Meow for this creature would be so special. My emotions warm, feelings blossoming for the creature along with a will to become it’s Meow; to embrace it.
“Holy Miaw!!!” I yell.
Jumping into the air as, in my relaxation, the magic that holds the mirror up in the air is released. Thankfully, the Trollfairy is fast, flying behind a wing from a dead Rabbit-Skvader, trembling at the near miss. We both flinch as glass shatters across the room; before I can do anything about it a powerful pain in my arm makes me shriek. My shrieks fall into hisses, and the sharp sensation shoots up my stinging arm with antagonising speed. I pant, turning my eyes to the Trollfairy as I reach to pat the fur around the wound, teeth clicking together as I come into contact with it.
“Is my Meow okay?” It inquires, eyes shimming with fear.
“I can understand you… ah! Yes, yes, I’m fine…” I reply with incredulity, pleased to realise that we are able to communicate.
Even as I shoot reassuring looks at the creature, I am searching through the potions on my shelf for an elixir, little bottles clinking as I sweep them to the sides. My paw brushes a light yellow elixir, and for a moment I consider using it on the glass; turning it into sand. But I place it back, saving such curiosity for another day and instead grabbing another shining bottle and placing it on the wooden table with a gentle tap. Letting magic flow carefully in the tips of my claws, I use gentle Green magic to manipulate the air, pulling the glass out of my arm and sending shivers of pain through me. When it is finally out, I sigh and carefully uncork the untested healing potion, letting a black and yellow drop plummet from the bottle under curious eyes. The effect is immediate, skin knitting together with a delicacy only nature is capable of.
Placing the potion back on its shelf serves as a reminder of how incredible my Secret Elixir had been… that it is my best work, throughout my entire life. Not only because it granted me this little funny helper; this companion… but also because I can understand it now. Even if the little creature is an ugly little thing, I am excited to have seen the beauty of the Elixir’s ability.
I have spent too much time in my home, perhaps it is time I finally earned some pearls… I haven’t stocked my little potion shop since I began creating the Elixir many stars ago.
An hour passes in thought, as I observe the Trollfairy’s energetic nature take course. It had hopped all over the room, from book to book; shelf to shelf. A few times it had stopped to look at the titles on the spines. So far, all it has found is the Fairytale books:
‘The Green Sisters’ by Mivi, ‘The Wing Wolf’s Souls’ by Thunder, 'The Fairy Caves' by Skjold and ‘The Yellow Power’ by Graba.
Which are some incredible old fantasy tales, but no one knows who all the writers are. Sometimes I wish I could live in one of these imaginary worlds, where good triumphs over evil in every instance.
I watch as the Trollfairy jumps again, leaving me unsure as to whether it is curious… or partaking in a serious search. It almost appears to be listening to the books, though… that would be silly since they make no noise, as far as my sensitive ears can hear. Perhaps it is some sort of joke.
Suddenly it shifts a book out of place, laughing with its cheeky little chuckle. It pulls the book off the shelf, landing precariously on an old bowl of milk and completely disregarding a stack of dead flies. Flicking quickly to the index, it’s eyes scan across the pages.
“What are these?” It questions, pointing to some pictures.
I read aloud:
“Cat-cats, “Giant Creatures, “Furless creatures”
“They sound funny, my Meow.”
“Indeed they do,” I answer, pleased to be communicating so freely.
“Do you wish to learn about them?” I suggest.
“I will!” It enthuses, shifting to sit.
“Cat-cats are like me, a Catmen, but much smaller, and they live in the wild… always walking on all four paws. Some legends say that Cat-cats are the souls of Catmen."
“Giant creatures - there has always been giant creatures in the world of Obbisia, though never have I seen one. Creatures as big as the magic tree and with powerful attacks. This crazy Catmen from town claims that they saw one a long time ago, and that it can do magic, but there are many stories and with each story comes a new and never before mentioned creature.
“Finally, the Furless; creatures that look like Catmen, but don’t have any fur at all and have strange ears. In legends, they also have the ability to produce powerful Blue Magic, without using a staff…” I chuckle and glance at the Trollfairy…
“Blue magic, how silly, there is only White, Red and Green magic!”
“That’s all of them,” I announce, but it just looks at me with large blinking eyes and begins, once again, to laugh. Of course, I do wonder if it can read… and when I pose my question as much, it quiets for a moment…
“No, my Meow, it’s just a funny creature!”
It points at the cover as it’s laughter resumes, the two seconds of silence quickly come to an end. Perhaps it is not my place to complain when I have often mourned the still silence of my home. Shifting back to the book, I focus on the beautiful illustration of a Fairy next to the title. An elegant, gorgeous sort of Fairy.
“This is a Fairy… legend has it that they live in the secret world of this forest. I have never seen one, myself, they’re too elusive.
But, there is a Fairyman who speaks of the Fairies, saying they have big Bluebirds which they ride as steeds.”
I glance again at my yet to be named comic sidekick. Having named me and stuck around… perhaps it shall choose it’s own name.
"Little Trollfairy, you need a name. What would you like to be called?"
A large grin spreads across it’s cheeks, lips parting. Astonishingly, however, it’s face falls into seriousness, previous intentions clearly lost to thought. Silence takes the reins once again, the Trollfairy’s head tipped as if listening to non-existent voices. Abruptly, it’s eyes flicker to the window, a shout pouring from its mouth without even a snigger…
“Shield us!”
I sharpen my view on the dusty window, watching cautiously as the morning light turns faintly blue… starting to get brighter… and brighter! I suck in a breath, spinning on the pads of my paws and searching for the white scroll my Sorceress Reflex cries for. I need to use the staff’s magic… Now!
