All bets were placed and Iola found herself holding a rather large red apple in her hands in front of her chest.
Her green eyes narrowed at the posturing mercenary before her. Dacia seemed to be having the time of her life, playing off the cheering crowd.
Then in a sudden blur of motion, the mercenary let loose a six-inch long blade right at her.
Iola took a deep breath, focusing on the speeding weapon.
The blade suddenly dropped to a creeping pace, moving inch by inch toward her heart.
Her eyes widened, noticing a hair-like silver string trailing from the hilt of the blade.
Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the blade slowly pierce the apple she held in her hands, barely three inches from her body.
But before she could feel the cold touch of steel, the silver cord went taut, bringing the blade to an abrupt halt.
Then the silver string seemed to disappear all together, leaving the blade embedded in the apple in her hands.
The nineteen year old felt another jolt go though her with the cheers of the crowd erupting around her.
She shook her head, realising that she was the only one who witnessed everything at the seemingly reduced speed.
To everyone else, the blade pierced the apple and stopped at that; all in the blink of an eye.
She held up the apple with the dagger in it, watching Dacia moving through the cheering crowd collecting on their wagers.
This was a new and fun experience for the young clanswoman, and yet she couldn’t help wondering if it had served its purpose.
She hadn’t heard or sensed anything noteworthy from the gathered people around them.
Maybe Dacia had, but it could take a while before they found some privacy to talk about that.
Right now the mercenary seemed too caught up in the moment of enjoying the admiration and the money they were receiving from the boisterous crowd.
