“I’ve never had rabbit before, but I hear it’s good.” Iola tried to sound livelier.
“It is... if cooked well.” The tall hunter sat down, placing the fresh kills before her.
Strapped to her broad back, a double scabbard nestled two broad-bladed short swords, her primary weapon of choice.
Several throwing knives and daggers adorned the wide belt that hugged her taut waist and a few smaller blades hid in the inside layer of her calf-length boots.
“Can you get a fire going, Iola?”
“Yes... and I can make a spit to roast the meat, if you can clean them.” Iola smiled and picked up two dried twigs from the pile she had gathered earlier.
She began rubbing the sticks together to get a spark.
Iola could of course have a fire instantly with a simple spell.
A small enchantment she had learnt from her mother as a child; a magic charm that allowed her to tap into the bountiful natural and elemental resources all around her.
But then, she was not too keen to have her present companion know of her ‘special abilities’.
At least not yet. Dacia was just a sell-sword she had hired and Iola was yet to gain the larger woman’s trust in full.
“Knife work of all kinds is my stock in trade.” The mercenary woman grinned, deftly flipping one of the rabbits between her adept hands and separating skin from flesh in one smooth move.
“So I’ve heard... and hired your service for that reason.” Iola smiled at the grnning sellsword.
“Gold well spent, little one.” Dacia nodded, holding out the skinned animals. “Here, two rabbits ready for the spit.”
Iola seasoned the meat with some salt and herbs from a little pouch she carried.
The anticipation of eating the rabbits after their long trek made her flat belly quiver and her mouth water.
“How much further from here?” She asked the mercenary as she turned the roasting rabbits on the makeshift spit.
