Lucas quietly slipped out as Ian worked. It didn’t take him long to process the file, he was finished in under an hour. Grim complained about being bored as he was stuck in his cat form, he wanted to wander around the station, play with Andrew.
“Either wait by the elevator for someone to come down or wait until you turn human.” Ian said as he finished typing up the work.
“Aw, no fun!” Grim pouted.
“You’re a five year old familiar who still hasn’t mastered changing. It’s not my fault, it’s yours.”
Grim groaned and plopped down on the keyboard, making it hard for Ian to start any new documents. They locked eyes, neither one blinking as they stared. One waited for the other to flinch. Ian needed to get work done and Grim just wanted attention. This went on for longer than it should as the elevator door dinged and footprints could be heard walking towards the morgue.
“Ian, I’m getting food orders. Do you want any...thing… What are you two doing?” Andrew asked the two.
Ian and Grim didn’t answer, both just locked eyes and waited for the other to move. Andrew saw this as his chance to sneak up and scare them, getting them to stop with the staring contest. He crouched down and quietly went over to the desk before jumping up and slamming his hands down, hard, causing both cat and person to jump, both losing their game.
Andrew walked over and gave Ian a peck on the head, apologizing for scaring him but it was close to lunch and he needed to get lunch orders.
“Tuna! I want a tuna fish sandwich!” Grim cheered.
Ian rolled his eyes. “Where’s lunch coming from?”
“Burger shop from down the road. Max’s getting the food.” Andrew answered.
“Number 5, twelve count with large fries and a cola. And Grim wants a kids meal.” Ian said.
“Tuna salad sandwich! How hard can that be?” Grim chirped up.
“I’ll let him know.” Andrew gave Ian a deep kiss and left the office.
Ian smiled as he watched his boyfriend walk away.
“You looking at his ass?” Grim teased, finally turning human.
“What! No!” Ian looked at his familiar, who was now human.
Grim had long black hair that hung over his eyes. There was black dusting around his face, going from cheek to nose to cheek. He had on a baggy black hood tank and black baggy jeans. If you only saw him from afar you would think he was a normal teen.
“Did you pack my switch?” Grim asked.
“Yeah, it’s in the bag.” Ian answered as he went back to work.
Fifteen minutes past and Andrew came down with two bags and three drinks, followed by a few more of their co-workers with their food and chairs they sit in. Ian always made sure one of the two autopsy tables were clean for eating on. No one mind eating in a place full of dead people, in fact it was always quiet, no phones ringing or clicking of keyboards to ruin the peace that was lunch.
To everyone at this table, Ian had a great life, a friendly familiar, a loving boyfriend, a stable job he enjoyed. But they didn’t know about his past. They didn’t know how he got the scars on his arms, why he couldn’t take any type of medication, why he looked like he never got any sleep, or why he was the way he was. Grim, his familiar, was his secret keeper. He knew the answers to it all.
There were times where Ian would flash back to a time where he sat at a small kitchen table that sat only four, he would see a pair of blond hair siblings, one was a little girl who looked no older than ten the other was Ian’s age, and a girl with dyed candy green hair. He could see them only as hollow people, people with barely any meat on their bones as they fight to only stay alive. He could recall the candy green hair girls haunting laughter as the little blond girl talked about her day at school.
During these flashbacks Grim would quietly nudge his master, waking him up and snapping him back into reality. Everyone would look at Ian, who had been quiet for an unusual amount of time.
“What? Is there something on my face?” Ian asked.
“No, you just went quiet, kinda worry about you.” Janet said as she picked up her pickle.
“Oh, just got lost in my thoughts again!” Ian forced a laugh so he would seem normal.
Everyone just nodded and went on eating, Grim just sat there and watched his master finish his meal. They didn’t talk after that, neither one, yet everyone else did. They laughed and talked as they finished up lunch and helped Ian clean up the table they ate at. Andrew had to go out of the room to answer his phone then returned to tell everyone they were needed up stairs, including Ian. Grim stayed behind, knowing fully well that this was an employee only meeting.
The meeting was about normal precinct news, alerts about last nights breaks and other nonsense news that was needed to be announced. Chef Lucas would give pointless comments about certain things he thought about.
“And in other news, did anyone see the newest Avengers movie yet? Because I have a few words to say.” Lucas asked.
“Waiting until the hype dies down!” Janet shouted from the back, getting a response of agreement from her fellow officers.
“Waiting for a better copy to pop up on a pirate site.” Ian joked, this caused a few more people to respond in agreement.
“You all should have taken me up on the offer for advance screenings then.” Lucas said.
“Dad, it was for a work night. In a packed theater, no way in hell Ian and I would go, plus that theater won’t allow familiars in it’s doors.” Andrew commented.
“Oh right…” Lucas just looked at his son, agreeing with him.
“Avengers is overrated to me!” Drake said as he flipped through his phone.
The room grew quiet as Lucas flipped through his papers.
“Did anyone catch what Ian and Andrew were fighting about this morning on their way to the locker room?” Max asked as she sat on the table.
“It was about Ian’s choice in playlist. He picked a musical that I would rather watch instead of listen to to drive to work with this morning.” Andrew cleared up.
“It was Repo the Genetic Opera if anyone was wondering.” Ian smiled. “Good movie, good musical, very gothic, extremely gory, Paris Hilton's face falls off!”
Lucas looked up at the man, trying to think if he had seen that movie before or not.
“Is that the one where a woman pulls her robotic eyes out as she sings?” Janet asked.
“Yeah, after Hilton’s face falls off!” Ian nodded quickly.
“Oh I love that movie! I really wanted to have sex with Hilton in that Zydrate song! She looked so hot!” Janet said.
“I always wonder what would happen if our world was like that, I think I would have too much fun raising the dead because hey they’re all over the place!” Ian joked, Janet laughed.
Lucas just coughed and pulled everyone’s attention away from the two and got them focus on the meeting.
“And in other news, I now question why I hired Janet Starsiri and Ian Kallen.” Lucas said.
“Because I was transferred here without any choice or say.” Janet answered.
“Because your necromancer was sent to jail for necro trafficking.” Ian answered.
“Is that thing?” Andrew asked.
“Yeah, it’s highly illegal and also you can get some nasty stuff from having sex with a corps.” Ian answered.
Everyone just looked at Ian, wondering what his life was like before joining them five years ago. Once again, Lucas pulled their attention away from Ian and back to the meeting.
