I awoke the next morning and could smell the smoke from the firepit. The sun was out, and I could feel the sea breeze flowing against my cheeks. I couldn't see Sav anywhere. However, I assumed he'd be back.
My stomach growled. It’s been days since I had a proper meal and this lone fruit won’t cut it. All around me, in the forest, is a bounty ready to be picked. Everything from berries to mushrooms goes into a sack I made from my shirt. This is enough for now. Time to eat.
...
I could hear the birds singing and the bugs buzzing, I never noticed how pure and innocent this forest is. I could hear the waves crashing along the beach and took a breath of fresh air. As I was walking to my hut; I saw something glistening on the shoreline. I ran towards the metallic object before the waves could wash it away.
I picked the mysterious object off the sandy shore; it was a bronze dagger no more than one foot long and two inches thick at the base. The bronze dagger was in a leather sheath sewed to a leather belt.
I wiped the sand off the dagger and sheath "How did you end up here?" I drew the blade and felt the edge; the blade had a razor-sharp edge and seemed to faintly glow.
I could see my reflection in the dagger and saw what a pitiful state I was in, my face was peeling and I had a huge gash across my eyebrow. Parts of my face were also swollen and disfigured "You are disgusting." I told my reflection.
I sheathed the dagger; a dagger randomly showing up hasn't been the weirdest thing that has happened on this island so far. But one thing is for sure; it'll be undoubtedly useful.
I heard a rustle in the trees, "Good morning, Sav, look what I brought!" I raised the bounty of food I scavenged. I set the knife beside the two fire stones and lifted the bag dumping out all the food inside.
"Sav check this out" I raised a mushroom with yellow spots. Sav grabbed the stick he used to beat me and smacked my hands, causing me to drop the mushroom. "Ow, what was that for." I rubbed my knuckles and picked up the mushroom again. Sav smacked my fingers again with his stick. This time he grabbed the fungus and threw it into the forest.
"Uh, Sav. Was that poisonous?" I asked. Sav stood on both feet and dramatically fell to the ground. "I'll take that as a yes." I laughed. I picked up another mushroom and Sav smacked my knuckles again. As I would reach for the items in the bag, Sav would either smack my knuckles or let me pick them out of the pile.
...
After a while, my knuckles were pretty bruised. "Sav, you could have just pointed them out." I looked down at my pile. Not much remained just these brown mushrooms and a few of these purple berries. I grabbed a few sticks and whittled them down to pointy needles.
I placed the mushrooms on the skewers; setting them by the fire to roast. As I let the mushrooms roast, I could hear them sizzle and pop. The berries were sour and tart, not nearly as good as the fruits from the tress.
Sav began poking me with is disciplining stick as I took to calling it. He drew a picture in the sand of a little three by three grid and used his stick to point to the ocean.
"I don't understand mate, what is that?" I asked. Sav then pointed to the vines and back to the picture. "You want to make a fishing net... Out of vines? Dude, I don't know the first thing about fishing." I told Sav.
He didn't seem to care, Sav climbed up a tree and started nibbling at the vines. I grabbed my bronze knife and followed after him. Arts and crafts with Sav; I don't think my knuckles can bear this...
...
Evidently, we needed a lot of vines for this. Because Sav has been nibbling nonstop for about an hour, "Do we need this many Sav?" I asked. Sav kept nibbling at the vines.
I picked up the vines and hauled them back to camp "This weighs a ton Sav!". I set the vines down and Sav patted an area of sand and sat down next to me began to twist the vines. "Not this again" I sighed. We must've been twisting ropes for hours. Every time the rope reached about fifteen feet, Sav and I would move on.
I would occasionally drink from the spring and eat my mushrooms. We made rope until night fell and the stars glowed, I never admired the night sky much up until now. You could see the milky way and all the beautiful patterns in the sky. There is no pollution in the air to block out the gorgeous night sky.
I asked Sav, "Do we have enough rope?" Sav huffed at me like he was scoffing. "How much more do we need?" Sav stood and began drawing a roughly fifteen by fifteen square in the sand with his stick. He alined the ropes inside. I saw what he was trying to do and helped him out.
"Oh, oh... all that work and we only filled about a third of the square." Sav did his huff-like laugh. "It's not funny, at this rate it'll take us three days to complete this net." I groaned I had blisters covering my hand from all the twisting of the ropes.
Sav curled up in a ball and began snoring, "I wish I could be as carefree as you little dude." With that, I closed my eyes.
...
...
...
Like this two and a half days flew by. I would collect the safe mushrooms and berries — the entire day comprised of gathering vines and making rope. My hands were blistered and bloody. When the day came to a close, I'd bathe in the ocean wiping away all the dirt and grime. And on the last day, we finally finished twisting out the last piece of rope.
I got so excited and grabbed the net dashing for the water and threw it inside. Only it didn't get very far. In fact, it didn't move at all. "Sav, this net is too god-damn heavy!" Sav gestured me to go further out. "No. No! NO! Last time I went out I got bit! I will not get bitten again!" I yelled, Sav shrugged his shoulders and sat down.
"Little shit. Fine..." I swam to where my toes couldn't touch the water and waved the net around. "Nothing is happening Sav..." I gurgled out. I saw Sav's palm on his forehead. He lifted his arms up and slowly curled them down, like how you would lift and spread a blanket.
"Oh..." I mumbled, I replicated the motion and spread out the net. I lifted like it was blanket, and let the net slowly sink into the water. Once it hit the bottom, I got super excited and swam down to see if I got anything. To my disappointment, nothing was there. I heaved the net back up to the surface and watched it sink again. Nothing happened.
...
I was out there for hours making a fool out of myself, and I could swear I could hear the faint echo of Sav's huff-like laughter here and there. I started to get frustrated. "One more time, and I'm done for the day." I focused on my net and got a good swing this time and watched it sink to the bottom.
I looked at the net disappointed. Suddenly, I saw something wiggling in the sand; I caught something! I reached out my hand and gripped that area of the net. I swam to the shore; dragging the heavy net behind me.
I stepped out into the sand and grabbed what looked like a six-foot-long eel by the tail. I ran towards Sav, "Look what I caught Sav! Look! Look!!!" The eel wiggled a little and then snapped, I felt a jolt of pain just below my right butt cheek.
Sav saw what happened and gave the biggest huff-like laugh he'd ever given. He mixed it with a cackle and squeal and fallen over on his back.
I was in pain, and my lower body went numb. I drew my knife and lopped the things head off. "Shits can't seem to get enough of me!" I brought the net and my catch to the hut. "Sav, I don't think this is an eel," I spoke resting my bottom on the soft ground.
This snake-like creature had blue skin and little spines that retracted into it's back. As well as a small fin on the tail and a creepy little face. It's like those sea monsters I would read in the school library.
"Sav, how do we cook this?" I showed the sea serpent to Sav. He grabbed the sea serpent's skin where I had decapitated it and pulled down. The skin easily came off, and it revealed it's slimy insides. "Sav, that is disgusting!" I grabbed the piece of meat from sav
I cut the serpent into segments and let it roast on skewers by the fire. The meat had cooked a nice golden brown. I took a bite from it, and to my surprise, it was pretty good. "Here Sav, have some." I tossed sav a piece, and he scarfed it down, licking his fingers.
I had just caught my very first 'fish' today.
