When we had gotten out of the car, I didn't know what I had expected to see. There were buildings, and then not far away there were kids playing. We had walked to one of the buildings, there was a good smell of grease, fresh fries. There was also the disgusting smell I knew all too well, coffee. "Would you like a hamburger or some chicken nuggets?" I looked at Mr. Jackson all confused, he turned to Mr. Luck, "What would you like? If you want I can order and you can sit with her."
"I'll take whatever you get with a coke." Then Mr. Luck had turned to me, "Come on lets go and find a seat." We had found one that was near the bathroom, and not very far from the counter where Mr. Jackson was. "So you don't have a name?" I shook my head. "Well what about the name Anastasia? If I remember right it means resurrection, which in simple terms is born again. She reminds me a lot of you, it's hard to believe what happened to her." He looks like he is going to cry.
"What happened to her?" I don't want him to hurt, but I wonder why she has so much of an impact on him.
"Well she was in a car crash. She was only 20, and the other person involved was not much older than her. Both of them had died, I felt like I had lost everything. I still had my family to lean on, and hers as well. It was all too much, we had wanted to get married after she had finished school. What you were saying in the car about being a toy, and not being allowed to feel that type of sorrow. It reminded me of what one guy said, 'Don't weep for the dead, it doesn't bring them back. So why bother morning someone who isn't there.' I don't know who it was, the accident was 8 years ago. What you said, it brought it all back, the pain and loss. I'm truly sorry that is how you grew up, but hopefully you have something better waiting in your future." Mr. Luck was crying, I didn't realize that I had brought so much pain to him. I didn't want him to hurt, but he was already hurt.
We both sat in silence a few minutes, then Mr. Jackson came to the table with the food. Mr. Luck had stood up and said something in his ear, then walked into the bathroom. "Well, I guess that was a little much." Mr. Jackson, had the same sad look on his face that Mr. Luck had. Then he had given me a small bag. "Well that is your food, I didn't know what you wanted. So I got what my cousin gets when he comes. And just so you know, what happened to Mr. Luck all those years ago, its not your fault. He still struggles with that, he really doesn't even like this job, but you are the first who has ever had a conversation with him. He is actually quite close with the family that you will be living with. Also just so you know, the name Anastasia has great significance to him. When she was young she had struggled with all sorts of stuff, she had also been neglected and lost her family when she was 11. She had known all her family, and was the second eldest in the house. She had struggled, and didn't feel wanted. When they had meet, she finally had someone she could rely on. He was the honest type, and had stuck up for her once when she was getting bullied. At first she didn't want to get close to him, but he asked to meet her in a local place. She agreed reluctantly, and he came and picked her up, she had asked to bring her brother. She didn't trust either of them, but had ended up telling him a lot. The brother, well he learned some, and some was told to him by his parents. Both boys were there for her, but at that moment Mr. Luck had decided that he was going to do all he could to make her happy. I'm sure she was happy when she died, but everything was too much. When she had died he went to the brother to cope, he spent more time with the brother than he did with anyone else. I remember him telling me, that one night he had thought he fell in love with the brother. Not long after did he realize that the brother was the closest to the sister, and that is why, there was a sense of security in him. After that, they decided it best if they try and spend time apart." Mr. Jackson looked like he was gonna cry, he kept smiling though, and looking away. "Ana was the name she went by most, no one knew her suffering, and most couldn't believe it. Although you don't know, I imagine you can relate in some degree to losing the one that you cared about most. Anyway, lets get off that subject and eat."
I had eaten all my fries, and half of my hamburger, before I realized that Mr. Luck hadn't came back. "Where is Mr. Luck? Isn't he supposed to have came back?"
"I don't know, he'll probably be back soon. Do you need to go to the bathroom? Once we leave, you might not have a chance for a bit." Mr. Jackson looked like he was concerned.
"Yeah, I'll be right back." I got up and walked into the bathroom with the little lady figure. When I had came back out, Mr. Luck was back at the table with Mr. Jackson.
"I'm sorry, but I really don't know what I'm supposed to do." I barely left the door, I stand there listening. "I don't mean to be rude to her, but you see how much she resembles Ana. Even the kid has had her fair share of pain, I don't want her to end up with the same pain as your sister. But I can't keep trying to act like I'm ok. The girl thinks she is just meant to be a toy, and you know what Ana said that day. She felt like a toy, one that had been abandon and beaten. I don't want that little girl to feel like that, and it hurts how much all of what she said, reminds me of everything."
"I get that, I really do. But she is just a child, Ana died 8 years ago. We can't keep acting like Ana is still alive somewhere, and for all we know the two of them could have been related. You remember how Ana said that when she was 6 she was given away, and that she didn't really remember it. Between Ana and her is 21 years, Ana said she had an older sibling that was from her Dad's previous marriage. She said the year that she had turned 5 her brother had died, and her father told her not to cry. Ana may resemble that girl for a reason, and I hope they aren't related, so for now, just act like you are ok with her. She doesn't understand what is going on. She is just a child, and you know the family we are taking her too, they helped me when I was growing up. Their oldest was one of my friends, it will be ok."
"Yes, but they said the child isn't normal. So how do we know she will be ok." Mr. Luck sounds hurt and worried. And was what Mr. Jackson telling me about Mr. Luck and the brother actually them two?
"I've met the boy, a few times. He tends to act more like a girl, he is interested in doing hair. He has asked his aunt for dolls, and all sorts of different things. He calls his aunt and uncle mom and dad, but he was too young to remember his parents. He isn't normal, in the means of he doesn't talk to kids at school. He avoids them, he is afraid of them. His aunt was hoping that she could help him, she lost her brother, that much we knew. He had lost all that he knew, he doesn't talk to his aunt. He doesn't even talk to his cousin, they are seen as brothers, but he stays away. She is worried that he is becoming detached, and by the looks of it. The girl is already detached, just like Ana was when I met her. Hopefully they can help each other, but I don't know what else to do. Apparently he doesn't like to leave his room, he turns 8 tomorrow and is still in 2nd grade, he refuses to go to school. I know the girl doesn't have an education, but I really don't know how else to help her." They both stay silent, I walk up to them after a few minutes acting as if I heard nothing. I finish my hamburger and my drink, all of us were silent.
"What are we doing when we leave?" I look at them, they both at each other.
"Well, Mr. Luck is feeling a little sick, so we are gonna go to the store and get you something to wear. Then we will go to the park and meet him there? That ok?" Mr. Jackson is still looking at me so I nod, he gets up, "Come on, Mr. Luck will be fine on his own." He turns to Mr. Luck, "Make sure you tell her hi on my behalf and that I will visit later." Then me and Mr. Jackson had walked out of the food building.
We had walked into the building next to it, there was a whole bunch of clothes with people dolls wearing them. We had walked into the kids section, "Do you like wearing dresses or T-shirts?"
"I like dresses, they are pretty most the time." We had looked at some dresses and I found a nice turquoise dress. There was a flower on it, and it had a little necklace thing on it too.
"What size are you? Or how old are you?" He is looking through the dresses, and then pulls one out. "This looks like it might fit, how about you go and try it on?" We walk over to the dressing room and he hands me the dress, then closes the door behind me. "When you put the dress on, come out so I can see if it fits." I managed to put the dress on, the flower was on the belt of the dress that went around my stomach. I walked out of the room with the dress on, and Mr. Jackson had stood outside the door. "Very pretty, do you like that? It fits well, so I think that it's the right size." I nod my head, and he pulls out his phone. "Smile please." I smile and from his phone comes a bright light. "Ok, you can go and change back to your other clothes." I went back into the room and put on my clothes. When I walk out I have already put the dress back on the hanger and hand it to him. "Is this all you want?" I nod, and we head to the counter.
The lady at the counter has a tag on her red shirt, and she tells Mr. Jackson how much the dress is. Then the lady puts it in the bag. "You are a very pretty girl. I hope that you have a good evening little missy." We walked away from the lady after saying thank you.
"It's getting a little late, already 2:00. We can hang out at the park then we need to start heading out. I was told that dinner is going to be served at 4, since their father has to leave at 5." Mr. Jackson holds my hand as we cross the street into the green area where the other kids are playing. "This is grass you like it?" I touch the grass, it feels soft, and some of it feels really wet, while other places are really dry.
"Mhm, the grass is so pretty." I smile and look around, we walked over to a bench and sat down.
"Do you wanna play?" I shake my head, "Ok, well Mr. Luck should be over here in a few minutes. So you can play, or sit in the grass." I chose to lay in the grass, and ended up falling asleep.
