I woke up, not realizing that I had fallen asleep. I look out the window, there is so much green and blue. I look at the man next to me, he is looking at papers in a folder. "Um, sir? What is the green stuff outside?"
"Are you kidding me? Have you not ever seen grass?" He looks confused, his face shows irritation, and also a bit of sadness. "Have you ever left that house?"
I put my head down, I should have just stayed quiet. "No I haven't. I've never left the house, and other than meals me and brother weren't allowed to leave the room. We had little kid toys and even some coloring books, and father would bring a whole bunch of snacks for us." Even though I try to seem cheery about everything, I can't help but feel like I have been missing out.
"Ok sweetie, we will try and see what we can do. Ok?" I nod and when I look up at him he pulled out his phone, tapped the screen, then put it up to his ear. "Hello ma'am... yes we did already get the girl... about 2 hours ago... yes, well I have just learned that she never left her house... yes I was wondering if you would allow us to be a few hours late... yes, I know. However I don't think its right to send her off, after being sheltered for so long. Yes, she was in her room apparently with her brother... No... Ok, thank you. We will be up there before dawn... Yes, have a good day ma'am." He put the phone down, and looked in the mirror that the driver was looking in. "Can we visit a park, and possibly a store?"
"Yes, do you want to wait till we get closer?" The guy hasn't spoken at all, so when he finally spoke it threw me off guard. His voice was soft, and not very different from the man who sat next to me.
"I don't mind, it is whatever you prefer." The man in front nodded, and then the one next to me had turned to face me, "We probably have a bit so you got any questions?"
I pulled out the paper that I had stuck in my pocket and handed it to him. "What does this say?"
"You can't read?" I shook my head than he looked at the paper. "Well... It says that you won't be getting anything from them anymore in a not nice way." He handed the paper up to the guy in front. "Tell them to kick them out of the system when you get a chance." He had then looked at me, "Is there anything else?"
"Um... I guess... Who is the person I'm supposed to be a toy for?" I look at him, his face is filled with concern, sadness, and anger.
"You are not a toy, why do you say that?" He is very curious and pulls out his phone. There is a microphone on the screen. "Don't feel worried, this won't hurt you ok? Just tell me why do you say that?"
"Because I am a toy. Father said that me and brother are just toys. We are supposed to serve others until they move on to someone new, or until we die. He said that we don't have human rights because we are below them, that's why he has to give us away. He said that we are like pets that can speak and interact with others." The man looks like he is going to cry. "And brother had told me that we are seen as toys, and that he hopes I don't get treated like one. He was the best brother, he told me once that there were others, but I never meet them. We aren't allowed to see a sibling once they leave, and father told me that we are not allowed to morn for them." I kept my head down and looked at the phone, every time I talked the little microphone had 3 or 4 rings around the top of it. When I look up the guy is crying, I don't know if its something I said, but he just gives me a hug. I don't understand any of this.
"I'm sorry, please listen to your brother. He sounds like a great kid, and we will try to find him, that way you can see him again." The guy is still crying but picks up the phone and ends the microphone. I don't know why he said that, but I wish I could see brother again. "Would you like to know anything about your new house? We got a long road and I can tell you a bit about it."
"Um... sure. But I have another question, what am I supposed to call you?" I look at him, and he looks taken aback by what I said.
"Well, you can call me Mr. Jackson, and this is Mr. Luck. So... About the family, they have a son. He I believe turns 8 years old tomorrow. I don't know his name, I didn't ask. His father works in a really big industry, I don't know which. His mom stays at home and does business work. He also has a sister who is in college and brother who is a bit older than him that prefers to stay and help with the grand parents. Only one of them is not related, and that is the youngest. Although he is treated like family, he is actually the mothers nephew I think. All I know is its her sisters kid."
"Ok... Well, the kid, what happened to his parents?" I am curious what happened to them, but I'm also scared that it might be something bad.
"I'm not allowed to disclose that, nor did I ask." He looked at Mr. Luck, "Are we in the area yet? It's past noon now and we haven't eaten nothing." He turned to me, "Did you eat breakfast?" I shook my head.
The other guy was looking at me, "We are about half an hour away. We can get food, visit the park, and shop. That ok sir?"
"Yes. Lets go. I really hope that you enjoy this. I've also heard that the family goes out on trips, so don't worry. You will get to see all sorts of different things." The guy smiles gets out of the car, the one in front gets out as well. Mr. Jackson walked over to my side and opened the car door. "Go ahead and leave your book in here. You don't need it, we will just be walking around, plus that way it won't get lost."
I put the book back in the car, and then we walked away.
