The next morning, they were tired from lack of sleep but didn't care.
Attended classes but didn't really care about them either.
All that mattered was that at 12:15 they got to eat together. Then all that mattered was that they'd get to see each other at the dorm approximately as the sun would caress the buildings that surrounded the school's residence. Étienne kept looking up to the clear winter sky, using it as a clock. Daniel kept looking down at the dirty ground, not understanding his unusual state of happiness.
When Étienne got to their room that day he was surprised to hear a soft melody making its way through the closed door. It wasn't angry, it wasn't complicated either. It didn't necessarily sound happy, but it created a blanket around the room that Daniel wore on his shoulders in a comforting manner. The air seemed to come alive around the sound of his acoustic guitar. It was far from what Daniel usually played, but it seemed to flow so naturally that Étienne momentarily forgot.
Étienne was careful not to startle his roommate. He softly opened the door, then walked two steps twice the length of his habitual steps to avoid the few creaky wooden tiles before he sat right next to Daniel.
The taller boy had his eyes closed, a small smile on his lips. He was sitting on the hard ground, his back to the side of his bed, and just like that Étienne thought he had never seen him so at ease.
When the sun rays finally made it through the window in a slow but sudden flash, it played around Daniel's hair, revealing hints of paler shades through his undone locks that draped his shoulders. A melody of colors within the sound of music.
He didn't notice Étienne looking at him nor did he at first notice his roommate sitting next to him. And softly the music took the shape of the room around them like some fluid would, painting the walls with a glimmering tint of honey. Étienne found out that the same color could go from dried mustard to gold with only the way he looked at it. Even the picture he took next to Daniel on his first day that was pinned to the wall over his undone bed seemed brighter.
Whether or not the taller guy noticed his roommate's presence Étienne would never know. But eventually their breath would synchronise, they'd be one little boy living the same moment. Living a dream together within the soft melody.
When the sun begun to disappear behind the surrounding buildings, the music gently stopped. Daniel found Étienne asleep by his side, and he had to carry him over to his bed. He couldn't resist a hand down the smaller one's hair nor could he stop himself from noticing how cute he looked while sleeping.
When Étienne woke up in his bed the next day, he wasn't sure whether it had all been a dream or not. But the walls had kept a subtle golden hint, and Daniel's eyes seemed to reflect that same color whenever he smiled. And Étienne never would know how he was the first to receive such colorful smiles from Daniel in a long time.
