The songs were still on shuffle, and, just to make the situation even more awkward for them, some romantic song softly started to play in the background. It wasn’t Daniel’s habitual music style, but something he wasn’t even sure about had struck him about this particular song when he first heard it. Then the song played louder and louder in their heads until they caught on to reality and Daniel quickly rolled to his back, next to Étienne on the ground, but maybe not as far as he would've with anyone else.
Not as far as to really put distance between them.
Their hands stayed dangerously close, and Daniel used his remaining hand to try and hide his deep red face. Étienne turned his head to his left so that he was facing the plain wall instead of Daniel, but the older guy's expression didn't go unnoticed by him.
“Sorry”, they both whispered at the same time before exchanging a look that said it all but that said nothing in particular, a small smile on both their lips. They stayed on the cold ground until the slight pink dust left Étienne's cheeks, until their little fingers almost intertwined. The magic flew away when the song ended as Daniel raised to his elbows, slowly followed by Étienne. They were lightly bruised from the fall and both their heads were a bit overflowed with thoughts that they both would have never expected to have toward each other.
They went straight to bed without a word that night. None of them both wished to try and explain what had just happened. Not about the kiss, of course that was an accident. But about the way it left them dreaming for more with their eyes wide open, the way Étienne wished for their hands to have intertwined, imagining what would've happened if Daniel didn't suddenly rise up. Daniel's back was turned to his roommate. His brain didn't compute, his brain refused to access his memory properly. The moment would get distorted, the kiss being longer, then shorter; their hands intertwined and their hands far apart until he didn't know anymore what was real and what was fanfiction from his own self.
On his side of the room, Étienne was convinced that he was the only one who felt something, telling himself that the odds of his roommate falling for him just as much as he was for Daniel would be impossible. That night, his insecurities took over and not even the magical moment from earlier could get him out of his gloomy thought. But there was something about that look Daniel had given him that gave him hope. That told him maybe he was wrong… but no matter how much he wanted to cling on to the thought, he didn't want to be deceived so much that he tried to forget about it.
One day they'll be laughing about their cheesy cheap shoujo first kiss, but for the moments their minds were clearly far from there.
