I woke up the next day, still feeling elated.
I got up and pulled my slippers on, walking down to the kitchen for some breakfast. Only one person was in the kitchen when I walked in, Sammy.
I was about to tell her what happened yesterday, but then I remembered what Jessica had said a couple of weeks ago. We hadn't talked all that much since then. Which is understandable. Sammy has her own stuff going on, and so do I, But I knew the truth, I had been avoiding her.
It was stupid, I knew that. Didn't make my feelings of jealousy go away. I shuffled to the fridge and opened it.
Sammy looked up at the sound, "Hey, good morning."
"Mornin," I mumbled.
"How have you been?" That wasn't a question you should have to ask your best friend. Especially one who lives in the same house.
"Good. You?"
"Same."
An awkward silence fell, I pulled some eggs out of the fridge and a pan. I stopped and turned around, "You want some?"
"Huh?"
I gestured to the eggs in my hand, "You want some eggs?"
"Oh uh sure, "
I go to the fridge and grab two more eggs. I cracked the eggs on the pan and turned back to her.
"Soo, "I paused thinking of what to say, "What you been up to lately?"
Sam shrugged, "Nothing much, just been studying a lot. What with finals coming up." Sam groaned, "I haven't gotten a decent nights sleep in a month, it seems."
"That sucks," I said as I put the eggs into two separate plates, I put some cheese on mine and handed her her plate with a bottle of ketchup.
"Thanks."
We dug in and for a while, nothing but silence was shared between us, until Sam broke it.
"You doing anything today?"
"No, why?"
"Well, my dad wants to go fishing, he invited me along just yesterday." Sam played with her hands, "I was wondering if you would join us?"
I put down my fork, "Why are we doing this?"
Sam frowned, "What do you mean?"
"Why are we acting like strangers?" I sighed, "You're my best friend. I don't want us to be driven apart."
"So go fishing with me."
I smiled, "You make a compelling argument."
"I know."
"Okay, I'll go fishing with you and your dad."
"Awesome, we leave at 12 o'clock."
It was at this moment that I was reminded of Jessica.
"Hey, is anyone else coming with us?"
"No, just you, me, and my dad."
I couldn't help but smile at that. I looked at the clock on the stove, it was ten. Definitely last minute.
I manage to get ready in less than an hour. Sam and I were out the door ten minutes later.
Once we were in the car and on the way to the bay Sam and I picked up right where we left off, I briefed her on everything that had happened in the last few weeks, including what happened between me and Aiden.
"Oh. My. God." Sam laughed, "You hooked up with the resident douche."
"He's not a douche," Sam opened her mouth, "Before you say it, no, we didn't hook up if we had I would've told you."
Sam eyed me, "Yeah, well, when you do, you better tell me all the juicy details."
I chuckled, "Of course."
We pulled up to the beach with Sam still trying to squeeze nonexistent details out of me.
We walked down the docks to Sam's dad's boat. I took a breath, smelling the salty sea before me. I loved anything to do with the water. Whether that be surfing, or just chilling on a pool noodle, I could already feel the stress and tension leaving my body.
We approached Sam's dad at the end of the harbor. He was a stout man with fifty years packed on, but he had the energy and enthusiasm of a five-year-old. It was one of the reason's why I tended to spend the holidays with Sam's family over my own. There was never a boring minute with Ben Kingsley, that's for sure.
"Katelyn, oh it's so good to see you," Sam's dad gave me a tight hug.
"Mr. Kingsley, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Katie?"
"And how many times do I have to tell you to call me Ben?"
"Touche."
"Alright," Sam's dad clapped his hands, "Let's get this show on the road. Or water as it may be." Mr. Kingsley laughed at his own joke.
As soon as we were in the boat, Sam revisited our previous conversation, "So, do you plan on seeing him again?"
"I don't know," I sighed. Mr. Kingsley started the boat, and we were off, "I mean, I think I like him, but everyone in the school knows him. I mean, what if they call me a slut or something?"
"Who cares. These people aren't going to matter in five years, hell even a year. Don't let them stop you from having a good time."
"You're right."
Sam hugged me, "I always am."
Mr. Kingsley sped up the boat, and our conversation could not continue. The wind swept my air, and light sprays of salt water hit my face, it smelled amazing. The boat bumped against the waves and rocked us. It felt like a really wet roller coaster, I loved it.
I spent the rest of the day relaxing, we even got to swim a little. Mr. Kingsley had made a delicious lunch that we ate around one, and we were back on land by nightfall.
"We should do that more often," I said.
