Candice was in her father's ford pickup truck again - instead she's alone for now and she's behind the wheels - a feeling that's so good as she sweeps the large vehicle through the winding mountainside like a pro - she's been secretly learning to drive her father's truck since she was in her teens, well not really a secret anyway since nobody dares to stop or question her - a privilege for being the daughter of a Sheriff.
The ridgeline were usually cold and snowy and its famous for many things - it got the best salmon fishery in the states, long big fat pinkish meaty juicy salmons many are eager to sink their teeth on. It's also famous as a holiday retreat - either skiing at the peak of Mount Adams during winter or hammocking lazily and roasting more salmon in the loghouse during the summer and certainly - it got the best urban legend for many many miles away.
Candice was deep in thought of the distinct voice that she heard last night - she felt like she could almost recognize that voice - it sounds like...Before long she reach the park Ranger's office just across the large Madrine forest - nicely tucked and surrounded by the Mount Adams.
She signals right, slides in through the bumpy driveway before coming to a halt just right outside the Ranger's station. She could already make out a tall but quite a handsome ranger standing casually by the office double doors - a cup of nicely brewed coffee in hand - Candice could almost smell the coffee from her car.
"You must be Candice - daughter of the Sheriff - right?."
"Am I really that famous?" Candice quickly extends her hand for a handshake after slamming the driver's door. She keeps staring bewilderingly at the cup of coffee.
"Yes you are indeed..I am Nicky Jones by the way," the Ranger shakes her hand back with a firm grip.
"Welcome to your first day of training, you should be..." Nicky noticed that Candice just keeps staring at his mug.
"I see you are peculiarly interested in my coffee."
"YES! yes I am..it smells so irresistible." giggled Candice.
"It's a special brew from Jakarta. Why don't we get you one inside?"
Nicky leads the enthusiastic lady inside the station. She was surprised how well kept the office is with lots of different types of information guide located on a stand, a few large organized desk and a large map of Albudeen Town unfolds in the center of the hall.
Before long, Nicky returns from the pantry with another matching mug with a large pinkish heart sign on it. Candice looks overjoy and eagerly takes a sip and immediately proclaims, "Now this is truly an exotic brew...So should I signup some forms now?"
"Oh...there is no need to, everything has been taken care for you...including your desk - here is where you will be seating," Nicky points to a rather small odd looking desk that seems to fit more for a high school girl.
"Wow...I feel like a Ranger already," said Candice sarcastically.
"Well...soon you will be - shall we take some air outside? - while I'll show you around," Nicky is still oblivious with her obvious disappointment.
"Sounds like a plan," replied Candice enthusiastically.
As they took a quick stroll through the woods, Candice was amazed with how tall and majestic the pine trees were scattered before her, some of them stood more than 100 feet tall, they just swayed gently and in unison by the breeze.
"Seeing the pines makes me feel like a child again. I used to have picnic over here with my mum." gestured Candice as she points at a large oak table complete with matching chairs overlooking the beautiful mountainous range.
"I am sorry about your mum by the way." said Nicky apologetically
"Wow...is there anything yet that you don't know about me?"
"Yes there is...I don't know who is your crush."
They both laughed out loud.
"So what makes you wannabe a Ranger?" asked Nicky inquisitively.
"I have always wanted to be a Ranger, plus I couldn't find a much cooler job to do in this town anyway." said Candice.
"Well spoken, it is a cool job indeed, especially if you like nature really a lot like me...well not until you find the troublemakers or rule-breakers to deal with anyway."
"If that's the case, I will gladly escort them back to a night behind bars in my dad's lockup."
They both laughed out loud again.
As the time passes, Nicky briefly explain Candice the long list of responsibilities being a Ranger, what time she should report for duties, when are her off days, yada yada yada - when suddenly appeared another Ranger from the back of the station - he seems to be a junior.
"You are Candice right?" asked Samuel Longfoot. Candice acknowledges.
"There is a call from your dad, he says it's urgent."
Candice felt puzzled as she hurries back to the office to answer the call while both the rangers followed closely from behind.
The phone was on loudspeakers.
"Dad...is that you?"
"Hey sunshine...sorry to interrupt you on your first day of work...do you think you can come up here to help out dad a bit on my work?" You scored high on forensic studies right?
Candice felt dreaded, it's the one subject that she hated most but also one that she's really good at. She sensed that she had to examine some body or something foul.
"Don't tell me I have to be at the morgue?"
"Yes you got it right, listen...this is the third case so far and I fear that if we don't resolve this quickly - the whole town is gonna end up hysteria. Tell you what - I will buy you that big fat salmon burger at Uncle Joe's when we are done.
"Sure thing...I am on my way dad," answered Candice reluctantly.
Candice looks at her superior seeking for a approval.
"Looks like we will call it a day from here. You may take leave now and help out your dad on his work, besides these gruesome murders are getting on our nerves lately. I do sincerely hope you can catch that culprit soon."
"Thanks Nicky, it was a pleasure today for the tour."
"The pleasure is always mine and tomorrow the park will be yours to take and explore," smiled Nicky.
