"This doesn't make sense," Basil said, looking at the line where mossy ground turned into snow, "How is this even possible?"
"I don't know," Pip chimed in from atop the wall, "Should I come down?"
Basil shook his head, "No. Stay up there until we figure out what the fuck is going on."
Basil walked ahead to step into the snow, but when he got there he hit what felt like a wall, he fell back, clutching his now bleeding nose.
"What the fuck?" He felt like he'd been saying that a lot lately. Of course, it was understandable why. A lot of 'what the fuck' type shit had happened lately.
He got up, wiping his nose with his shirt sleeve. He held his hand out and felt around the area where he'd just hit. It collided with a hard surface. Or what felt like a hard surface anyway, seeing as Basil couldn't actually see it. It wasn't glass either. He would be able to see the reflection of light against it. This thing, whatever it was, defied all natural laws. Basil couldn't wrap his mind around it.
He didn't have to either when he heard a noise coming from the dene=ser area of the forest he coun]dlnt see through. His mind went through its catalog of all the thing's the noise could be, but he got his answer when the leaves parted and out stepped a man. Several followed after him.
"Well look what we have here." The man said walking closer to the edge of the snow. He stopped just short of walking past the invisible wall separating the two seasons.
"Do I know you?" Basil asked.
"No, but I know you." The man smiled at Basil, "Not as well as I'd like to though."
"I think I'll pass," Basil said. He was slowly making his way back to the wall. He didn't like the look of the man. He was tall, his face was weathered. Basil assumed he looked much older than he was. if his demeanor was anything to go by. He was acting like a kid on Christmas.
"Where are my manners?" The man said, "I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Cyrus. And yours?"
"I thought you already knew me."
Cyrus laughed, "I may have stretched the truth a bit. I knew you when you were a baby. Your mother and I used to be good friends."
"Were?" Pip asked.
"Yes, sadly your mother had a change of heart and shut me out. For no reason." Cyrus put his hand to his nose, making like he was holding back tears, "And then, she ran away, hid from me. But now, her son has turned up. That would be you."
Basil was against the wall now. The looked up at Pip and tried to show him what he wanted to do. Pip nodded, but before Basil could Make his move Cyrus continued talking.
"So we thought we'd crash the party."
As if on cue another explosion sounded somewhere behind Basil. Except this time it was close enough that the ground beneath him shook so bad he almost lost his balance.
It nearly threw Pip off the edge of the wall.
"That's enough." Basil's mother comes walking from Basil's left, flanked by men and woman all with there swards pulled.
"You guy knows that guns exist right?" Basil asked. He was so confused about why everyone seemed to have swords as there weapon of choice. there were much more efficient weapons out there.
"Don't bother with them," Cyrus said, "Such traditionalist. They hate change."
"You should leave Cyrus. You're not wanted here," Basil's mother said.
"Don't change the subject Nyla," Cyrus retorted.
Basil stared between them. He initially hadn't believed what Cyrus was saying. But Nyla just confirmed it. At least he knew her name now.
"Leave now," Nylas tone had taken to an aggressive nature, "Or I will have someone escort you off the premises." Nyla raised her hand, and five men walked into Basil view on the other side of the invisible magic wall thingy.
"That won't be necessary," Cyrus said. He backed up with his hands up. He looked over at Basil before turning around.
"I'll see you soon," And with that, he was gone. Basil blinked his eyes and looked again.
"Wher-where'd he go." Basil pointed his finger, "He was just there, and then he was gone." Now that Basil felt his life was no longer in danger, he was completely okay with freaking out, "And what's with the wall thingy? I mean, am I tripping? Did you drug me? Is that what's going on? Because if so-"
"Calm down," Nyla interrupted him, "All will be explained in due time."
"No!" Basil yelled, "I want answers now."
Nyla sighed, "I just don't think you're ready yet."
Basil laughed, "You don't think I'm ready. You don't know anything about me."
Nyla took a step back, sputtering, "Basil you don't mean that."
"You abandoned me for twelve years, you don't get to start acting like your my mom. Because you're not."
Basil took a calming breath and looked up at Pip. He was on the verge of crying.
"We've been here for weeks, it seems. And all I've found out is that you're still alive. And I'm done waiting around for you to grow the balls to tell me the truth. If you don't tell me what the fuck is going on right now, we'll leave and never come back to this fucking cultish commune thing again."
Nyla looked at Charles. He's seemed to change his mind about how useless Basil is because he nodded his head. She sighed, "Alright, follow me."
"Thank you." Basil walked over to where Pip was on the wall and gestured for him to jump. He did so, and Basil caught him. Pip hugged him as hard as he could manage, he was shaken by what just happened.
"He's not coming with you," Charles said, "This is privileged information."
Basil glared at him, but Pip was the one to speak up, "He'll just tell me anyway." That much was true.
Charles looked like he was about to keep arguing, but Nyla shooshed him.
"That'll be fine, Let's go." Nyla began walking along the wall. It seemed they would be taking the long way back.
"We have much to discuss.
