“Jolon? Jolon!” Mother screamed after him. She gazed back to me with red tinted eyes, fighting her anger. “Xander I think you should leave too-”
“What, mother not you too!” Kono and Croix gasped but mother held up her hand silencing them.
“Just till we work this out. It'll be safer. Please,” she pressed a kiss to my temple. “I’m sorry.” She whispered then she ran after father.
My siblings stared open mouthed after her before turning to me.
“What are you going to do? Where are you going to go?” Kono held me tight against her side.
“I don't know…” I mumbled.
Croix pulled us to him as if he could protect us from what was happening.
“I can see if they'll let me move in early?” He mumbled a few more things after that in a panicked ramble.
I leaned into them. This was too much.
This wasn't how I wanted today to go. I wanted to figure everything out first, get used to living here again, having friends. Then maybe stay here longer then a few months, and if I was lucky find my soulmate.
I shook my head slowly my disbelief still strong. I guess I was lucky but still I wanted to get to know Lumir better then we'd come here together and tell them, even if we weren't dating, his support would help me. Now I learn that he’s my soulmate. A Supernaturals everything. This was supposed to be joyous finding this out. But now with Father disowning me, it took that from me. I felt hollow and sick to my already twisting stomach.
“He can come back with me.” Mr. Mark’s voice cut through the fog that filled my head.
“Why?” Croix asked anger seeping into his normally neutral voice.
“It's the safest place in the whole town. Your brother will be safe there.”
“Are you saying he's in danger?” Croix growled eyes swirling red.
Mr. Mark glanced up the stairs. “I'm not sure… the few times I've seen outraged Vampires they tend to be unpredictable, and once they set their eye on something they hunt it down. I hate to say this but till your father calms down or sees reason, Xander's in danger.”
We had nothing to say to that, because it was true and I knew that a little too well.
“Aren't you worried about your job? He could fire you for helping me.” I questioned worried.
Mr. Mark shook his head. “No, your father can't fire me, only your grandfather or mother can. I'm sworn by an oath to them- and them alone.”
Croix and Kono shared a look then glanced at me.
“Xander, what do you think?” Croix asked.
I didn't really have a choice did I? Croix and Kono weren't ready to move yet which would leave me homeless. I could feel my siblings fear through the link, I just wanted to put everyone at ease, put this behind me.
“I’d like that, thank you Mr. Mark.”
“Xander do you want us to stay and help you?” Croix questioned.
“No you two need to get to school. Kono can you grab the notes I'll miss today?”
They helped me to my feet. “Of course.”
Kono kissed my cheek and Croix gave me a hug before leaving. I watched them go with mixed feelings. This was probably the last time I would see them here.
I turned away. “Thank you again Mr. Mark.”
“Think nothing of it. Now go pack I'll wait here, unless you'd like company?”
I looked up the staircase where I could just barely hear mother and father yelling. Something heavy fell to the floor a loud growl sounding.
“Company.”
He nodded and together we went to my room, packing my things.
I was kinda glad that I hadn't gotten around to fully unpacking since I came back, so I only had to grab a few personal items and I was done.
“That everything?”
I shrugged. This room never felt like home but it was all I had and now I didn’t even have that.
“Yeah that's it.” Besides my Jeep, which I didn’t feel up to driving. I'd ask Kono or Croix to drop it off later.
Once we were in his car I sank into the seat trying to stay calm. I felt hot and my skin crawled, my vision swam. Did Vampires get fevers?
“Xander you okay?”
“Not really.”
His hand patted my shoulder. “I hate to ask this but do you… do you want to press charges?”
“Charges?”
He nodded. “Against your father.”
“Why?” Though I think I knew.
“Xander your of legal age to press charges after that stunt he pulled. And you can-”
“I’m not pressing charges!” I shook my head. “I can’t. I mean what would that do to my mother? Pressing charges would take him from her and could get him arre- N-no I can’t.”
“Whoa, son calm down. Don’t worry about your mom, this is about you-”
“I-I can’t.” I closed my eyes. “Mr. Mark do you know my... background?”
He blinked, probable confused by my abrupt topic change. “I do.”
“Then you know how Naturals view me, it’ll my word against his.” I sighed. “Your fighting a losing battle.”
“No battle is a losing one unless you’ve given up.”
My temper flared. “You don’t understand-” I pinched the bridge of my nose, trying to calm down before I said something I’d regret. “Forget it. I won’t press any charges.”
His hand squeezed gently. “Well I haven’t given up and you shouldn’t either. Because no one needs to be shunned for who they are or what they've done. But alright I’ll drop this for now.”
I bowed my head, nothing more to add.
With a sigh he backed out of the driveway and took me to his home.
The home of my soulmate.
