No one could have expected it, the weather was still perfect the morning of departure, but as soon as the boat lowered anchor that afternoon it started to pour. The boat swayed and sure enough, by the swells, it was not going to be any better beneath the waves. It was a five day trip, and the first day was already enough trouble that the captain had plans to return if the wind and waves became even a little more violent. Inside we were all playing cards trying to wait the storm out, hoping in the morning it would be clear, but there was one person crazy enough to park outside on the top deck on her little rainbow colored beach chair as it was the perfect time to sun-bath.
When the night settled, the wind had no intention of ceasing, but at least the rain had stopped. She came wondering in smiling like she had the best time of her life. After occupying the shower for almost an hour I watched her head to bed with her still wet dripping hair.
Sometime during the night it must have started raining again, and in the early morning I was awoken by the violent rocking of the boat, the captain was taking us back, the trip officially cancelled. What was the use of staying?
Back on the island at the hotel I had nothing to do. It continued to storm and in the next two days I would watch as the ‘crazy lady’ would walk in the rain while everyone was warming up to each other, drinking and eating, the restaurant having turned it a gathering and socializing spot.
On the third day the sky was still dark and ominous but at least the wind died down some and it was only a few drops here and there still falling. I do not know what I was thinking that lead me to go out for a walk but I did. I oddly found the fresh crisp air relaxing. Deciding to take one of the winding routes through the thick forest like trees I ended walking up hill till I came to halt by sharp incline, the steps were build using stones in the area, making it look a bit more natural rather than ‘man-made’, it was narrow and on the steps I saw her knelt down trying to coax something out of the bushes, on closer look it was Tarsier. The island was full of them!
It inched forward and so did I hoping to not scare it away. The girl’s head slightly tilted in my direction as if the glance at me, but instead to she continued to make a soothing clicking sound as she held out her hand a grasshopper pinched between her fingers.
It was just about to grab for the insect when its head snapped up, beneath my feet where I stepped were some sticks that snapped. It quickly ran not in the least interested in taking easy prey when its life might be in danger.
“Sorry.”
“Don’t worry, they’re wild it’s not your fault, its instincts are just there to keep it safe. Of course it was great to have it come up so close and would have been even more so if got it to eat out of my hand, but aww ‘ell!”
“By the way are you heading up as well?”
“Yes, the view’s supposedly really beautiful from up there! Why don’t we walk together?” Nodding I followed after her, we walked mostly in silence, a question slowly forming that I needed to ask her as the top of the stairs finally came into view; instead the words came out all… ‘wrong’…
“You’re crazy weird, you know that?”
