At the station, Quinn sat in a room with a table and a couple of chairs. The room looked messy with old donuts and a coffee pot still half full sitting cold on the counter. Quinn figured it was to try and get her to relax, this wasn’t her first rodeo. She has seen enough of these rooms to know she was being recorded.
She sat perfectly still, just picking at the table.
She wasn’t surprised when she saw Agent Carly Cortez from the FBI walk in. That woman has had it out for her since the beginning.
“Hello Quinn, I like the new last name by the way. Really did throw me off your trail for a while. I would say nice to see you again, but I think you get the jiff.”
“Carly, always a pleasure.”
“So, what brings you in here? Of your own volition that is.”
“Well, I found the wire on Brandon. I figured better clear my name before you think I did this one too.”
“I see, how thoughtful of you.”
“Well ask away detective.”
“Am I dreaming?”
“Hurry before I change my mind.” Quinn spat.
“Alright let’s get to it, how did you know Alice Kinsley?”
“I was her secret lover for a while. Nothing major just fooled around a little.”
“Where were you that night?”
“At her house, with Alice.”
“When did you leave?”
“Just after sunset. Right after I saw Brandon leave, I’d say about ten minutes after that. I don’t know the exact time.”
“Where did you go afterward?”
“To my family cabin to commemorate the death of my parents like I do every year.”
“Can anyone validate this?”
“Besides my phone GPS, nope.”
“Would you be willing to let us see your phone records?”
“Sure, why not? I’m feeling generous.”
“What were you and Alice doing before you left?”
“Messing around, I got some photo’s and a video if you want to see.”
“Enlighten me.”
Quinn pulled out some Polaroids from her camera bag and her expensive camera. She pulled up a video. Agent Cortez inspected the pictures before turning her attention to the video. She hit play.
The video showed Quinn and Alice playing around, laughing and trying to wrestle each other. Then it showed Quinn Kissing Alice before Quinn reached for the camera and turned it off.
“Looks like you two were close.”
“As you can see from the footage, it was still light out when the video was taken.”
“Mind if I submit this video into evidence?”
“Actually, I do.” Quinn took her camera back.
“Hmm, I see. Anything else you want to add that will help prove your innocence?”
“Sure, Alice was into a lot of weird online chat stuff. I would check there. Also, Alice’s mom has a secret boyfriend. Get this, it’s her brother in law. Yep, Alice’s mom Is having an affair with her sister's husband. Alice knew about it, sounds like motive to me. But I guess I shouldn’t tell you how to do your job.”
“Answer me this, why should I believe that you didn’t do this?”
“If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. I didn’t do anything. I didn’t kill anyone, including Alice. I know you have it out for me, that in your head I’m some freak serial killer, but I swear to you I didn’t do it. Just like you couldn’t prove all the others, you will see that once again no evidence will tie me to this crime either. Check my phone record and GPS location. Technology doesn’t lie.”
“I see. Well if you miraculously remember anything else that might be able to miraculously clear your name, you know where to find us.”
“Right and if you miraculously find some evidence that will somehow tie me to the crime. You know where to find me.” Quinn got up to leave.
“I wonder, do your new friends know who you really are? Maybe I should bring them in for questioning and enlighten them.” Cortez called.
“Go ahead and try, I think you’ll find that they are much more loyal to me than Brandon.”
“You overestimate your power.”
“Do I?” Quinn walked out.
When Quinn got home Brandon was waiting for her again. She sighed.
“Look I’m sorry I freaked out on you. I went to the police and told them everything, even showed them the video and gave them my phone records.”
“Really?” He said skeptically.
“Yes, really. I want you to know I didn’t do this. That we are still friends. I’m sorry I was an asshole.”
“This has just been so hard you know? I can’t believe she’s really gone.” A sob escaped his lips.
“Hey, come here. It’s gonna be okay. They will catch whoever did this. You got to stay strong. And for the record you are underrated.” She embraced him in a hug.
He broke down and started crying into her. Quinn had a bland uninterested expression, no emotion what so ever. Not that Brandon could see it. She rubbed his back and soothed him before pulling back.
“I know what might make you feel better, There is a party this weekend, at Mason’s house. It’s a costume party, my friends and I are going as the Wizard of Oz theme, we still need our courageous lion if you want in.” she smiled at him.
“Really, you’d want me to go with you? But I thought you said you didn’t want anyone to know we were friends.”
“Screw ‘em. Friends got to stick together, especially in times like these. Alice would have wanted me to include you. What do you say?”
“Okay, but uh can I bring a friend?”
“Is it Adam?” Quinn smirked.
He nodded with a blush.
“Sure, tell him to be our wizard. You can come to my house before the party and I’ll help you get ready. We are going to look so badass. Your one of us now. If anyone tries to mess with you they are going to have to deal with me.”
“Thanks, Quinn. I’m sorry I yelled at you before. I am just so—”
“It’s okay, you don’t have to explain. You were doing what you had to. So long as we are good now, we have an understanding?”
“Yeah. I know you didn’t kill her, you would never do that.” He said.
“That’s my boy. Now go home, get something to eat, get some rest.”
“Okay,” He nodded, wiping his tears.
She ruffled his shaggy hair and watched him go back to his house. Once she was in her own house she rolled her eyes and went to her room, setting her camera down. She stripped her shirt off and flung it to the floor before doing the same to her pants. Then practically naked she walked to the bathroom to take a shower.
She turned the water onto the hottest setting waiting a few seconds before stepping under the scolding jets. Every time a drop would touch her skin it would sizzle being as the hot water connected to her ice-cold skin. She absently scratched at her burn scar.
When she got out of the shower, she walked naked to her room, water dripping onto the floor. Before she could step in, she heard a creak in the floorboards. The sound of someone taking a step somewhere in her house. She paused mid-stride to listen.
No other sound came. With a sigh, she shook her head and went into her room. She towel dried off and then slipped on some underwear and a long t-shirt. She flinched when loud music suddenly turned on from her living room.
The End by The Doors blared throughout her house.
She slipped some shorts on before pulling her hair up into a ponytail and calmly walking over to investigate. The music seemed to be coming from nowhere at all. No stereo, no boom box, no tv, nothing was on to play that music. Her icy eyes scanned the area for clues.
A shattering sound came from the kitchen. She whirled around but saw no one. She quickly walked over and saw a shattered glass laying on the floor. The door to the game room slammed shut. She turned and walked down to investigate.
She opened the door slowly and looked around, but once again she saw no one. The music grew louder.
“There’s danger on the edge of town…” The song played on.
Quinn walked back out of the room and back to the kitchen, when she looked down at the shattered glass, the glass was whole once more and not a shard of glass laid on the floor. She stared at it before bending down and picking it up.
In the reflection of the glass was a dark figure standing behind her. She turned to look but no one was there. She put the glass up and reached for a knife.
“The killer awoke before dawn…” The song went on.
Quinn walked back over to the living room with a knife in hand. She pushed the couch over and flipped the coffee table. She then moved the rug and lifted up the secret hatch in the ground. When she opened it the music got louder. She quickly climbed down into the pitch blackness.
She scraped the knife against the wall before flipping the light switch. In the middle of the room was a single record player, playing the song. She walked over to it. Before she could turn it off the lights went out.
“This is the end my only friend, the end…” The song blared out.
Quinn waited for the song to finish not daring to make a move. Her hand gripped the knife tightly. Her heart was in her ears as her eyes scanned the utter darkness. When the song was finally over the lights flicked back on.
For a second the empty room looked filled with people, then the lights flickered again and only Quinn was there. Not even the record player was there anymore. Quinn took a shaky breath and dropped the knife, it clattered to the floor loudly.
She sat down in the room. Right in the middle. Right at the center of a strange circle that was drawn on the floor.
Quinn let out a soft whimper burying her head into her hands.
The next morning at school Quinn didn’t talk much, she just laid her head down and stayed silent. The other girls eyed her.
“Hey, how did it go with the cops?” Stratus tried.
Quinn just shrugged.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I’m just tired.”
“Oh, okay.”
Quinn sighed and forced herself to sit up.
“I invited Brandon to the party with us, he’s bringing his friend Adam.”
“That was nice of you,” Neveah said.
“Whatever.” Quinn averted her gaze.
The bell rang and the girls went their separate ways. During lunch, Quinn poked at her food before pushing it away in disinterest.
“I’m gonna go to the library.” She said then she got up and left without waiting for input.
“Okay, what’s her deal now?” Neveah asked.
“She looks sort of sick or something,” Izzy said.
“How so?” Harley asked.
“She’s all pale and gloomy looking. The only make up she has on is her usual black lipstick. Did you see the dark bags under her eyes? Plus she didn’t eat this morning, now she didn’t eat her lunch? Maybe she’s sick?”
“Or depressed.” Neveah chimed in.
“What makes you think she’s depressed?” Stratus asked.
Harley and Neveah shared a look.
“What was that look? What are you guys hiding, you’ve all been acting strange since yesterday. Did something happen between you guys?” Stratus pushed.
“Sort of,” Neveah sighed.
“Don’t tell her!” Harley hissed.
“Don’t tell me what!? What’s going on? Do you know?” Stratus turned to Izzy.
“No clue.” She shrugged.
“Look long story short Quinn kind of told us she wants to die. She said she’s lonely.”
“Really lonely,” Harley added.
“What? When did she say this? How come I wasn’t there?”
“I asked her if she wanted to talk about it, she said if she did, she would hire a therapist.” Neveah ignored Stratus and went on.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner!? Hello, that’s my best friend here.” Stratus got defensive.
“If she wanted you to know she would have told you.” Neveah shrugged.
“No she wouldn’t she’s Quinn, she hardly talks about her feelings, like ever.”
“Well, we agreed not to talk about it.”
“Why? What else happened?” Stratus pushed.
“Look we were high, no big deal.” Harley shrugged.
“What! I thought you were done with that?”
“That’s what I said,” Neveah smirked.
“Oh get off your high horse, you got high too.” Harley rolled her eyes.
“What!? No way.” Izzy said in disbelief.
“I didn’t want to, Quinn made me.”
“Did not, you totally did it all by yourself.”
“Yeah with a big heaping dose of peer pressure.” Neveah shot back.
“You could have just said no and left.” Hardly shot back.
“Yeah, right then I would never hear the end of it from Quinn.”
“Sure, sure, you just wanted to kiss her.” Harley cringed once she realized what she said.
Neveah also cringed before the two of them turned to Stratus.
“What did you just say.” She glowered.
“Neveah kissed Quinn,” Harley said.
“You did it first, I saw you two getting really frisky, way too much tongue.” Neveah defended herself.
“It was just for fun, it didn’t mean anything to me.” Harley shot back.
Stratus got up with a growl in frustration before stomping off.
“Not cool guys.” Izzy shook her head.
“Quinn came on to us! Not our fault she's a lifeless zombie inside.” Neveah defended herself.
“Still you know Stratus has a secret crush on her.”
“Not so secret because everyone freaking knows about it.”
“Including Quinn,” Harley added.
“So, how was kissing Quinn?” Izzy smirked and leaned into the gossip.
“Well…”
Stratus marched towards the library with a goal in mind. She wanted to set Quinn straight. How dare she kiss Harley and Neveah after she kissed her. What the heck? So not cool.
Stratus walked in and scanned for Quinn, she didn’t see her anywhere. She walked all the way to the back towards the lounge chairs. Quinn was there, curled up on a chair, sleeping. She sighed.
‘Maybe she really is just tired.’ Stratus thought to herself.
She walked over to the sleeping Quinn and shook her awake. She retracted her hand lightning fast once she felt how cold Quinn was. Ice cold. Death like cold.
“Quinn?” She said in alarm.
Quinn didn’t move.
“Quinn.” She shook her harder.
“Hmm? What?” Quinn sat up.
“Christ you scared me.” she hugged her.
“What? Why?” she awkwardly hugged back.
“Your ice cold, and you weren’t moving and I just thought---”
“I’m fine. Take a breath. That’s just my natural body temperature.”
“Well wear a thicker jacket or something.”
“It doesn’t bother me.” she shrugged.
“Just don’t scare me.” she pouted.
“You worried about me?” Quinn teased.
“Well no duh, apparently you are depressed?”
“What, who told you that?”
“Neveah and Harley, also you kissed them!?”
Quinn sighed.
“Hello, denial would be nice right about now.”
“Meh, it was just for fun. It didn’t mean anything.” She shrugged.
“So do all your kisses just not mean anything?” Stratus asked.
“No, just the ones I say.”
“Well what about our kiss?” she muttered, averting her gaze.
“Hmm, our kiss. You know I don’t think we’ve had a real kiss yet. That was more of a peck,”
“That was totally a kiss, you kissed me.”
“But you didn’t kiss back.”
“And? Doesn’t mean it doesn’t count.”
“Are you jealous?” Quinn smirked at her.
“No! I don’t even like you like that.” She huffed.
“Well if you don’t like me then I don’t see what the issue is.” Quinn shrugged.
“Do you like me?” Stratus asked.
“Why don’t you come over later, just the two of us. We haven’t done that in a while.” Quinn stood and stretched ignoring the question.
“Okay,” Stratus said.
“By the way, you don’t have to worry about me, as I’ve mentioned before. I can handle myself. Although it’s fun to see you get all flustered.” She teased.
“Oh get off it.” Stratus stood up.
Quinn smiled at her before kissing her on the cheek. Stratus went red in the face.
“For the record, all our kisses matter,” Quinn whispered in her ear before walking off just as the bell rang.
