At that me and Ellie sat on the couch with our transformed friends as my Dad began his tale, Mom leaning against his side.
“Twenty four years ago, I was a Betelgeuse- the right hand to the Hunter organization. My mentor the only other member above me besides the Head- was taking me to check in on a buyer of exotically rare Supernatural. Apparently we knew of their business but they founded us with money so we normally looked the other way. This time however we were given a tip that they were selling something that couldn't be released to the public, something that we had no knowledge on and that was unheard of. The Hunters wanted it and that was your mother.”
Mom spoke up then when Dad fell silent. “I am is a hybrid of two beings that normally have no interactions. But my race is completely made up of many Dryad’s and Undine’s thus parents had me. Though I still don't remember how I ended up with those buyers. But thanks to your father I was free of whatever fate they had set for me.”
Dad laughed. “You guys will never believe me when I say that when I saw her I forgot why I was there in the first place and why she shouldn't be. My mentor said that the buyer had too many Naturals in his possession- many that needed to be put down.” He shook his head. “The plan was to go in that night and clear out the warehouse as a warning. But after seeing your mother I really looked at what was in front of me and knew this couldn't continue. So that afternoon hours before the plan was set to begin, I snuck in and let everyone go.” Dad smiled down at Mom and their joined hands.
“It took some convincing for some of those captured but eventually I had everyone following me as I lead them far from the city. I led them to the innermost rim of a forest and told them they were free and to leave. Many thanked me while others just ran. I watched your mother leave and thought that was the last time I'd see her but it was for the best. I made my way back to the warehouse double checked that it was empty and sent it up in flames and escaped to make my alibi.
“I showed up hours later with my mentor and the buyer. We searched the area for days but nothing showed up so my mentor and I went home. When I came to terms with what I did I started doing solo missions that ended with me faking many Supernaturals deaths so the Hunters wouldn't get suspicious. But on one of these missions I was trying to convince an elemental Titan that I was trying to save them. It went on the attack and this particular attack would have killed me, no question. But the hit never came and when I looked up I was surrounded by thick brambles and her.”
Dad turned and kissed Mom's temple fondly as she went to finish.
“The day your father saved me I literally couldn't believe my eyes. A human wasn't hurting me but letting me go at the cost of himself for all of our lives but I grew worried so I stayed behind.”
“But Dad didn't see you?” I jumped in.
She laughed. “No I can change my size and take a few different forms to keep myself safe. So I shrank and hid on his person.”
Dad blushed and his look filled in some missing points. He cleared his throat. “Anyway, she saved my life and convinced the Titan to come with us so we could free it and stage it's death. After that was a success I went back to my home and confronted your mother but that didn't work out as I had planned.…”
“Why?” Ellie asked.
“She didn't speak English. And yelling had negative effects and hand gestures only go so far. But no matter I tried to tell her she had to leave or we'd both be killed. But I learned that her home was on the other side of the globe and she'd never survive on her own to make the trip. So I planned to take her back but as I tried to we grew closer and well we learned almost two years later that we were pregnant with you two. And though I was happy our fears were high, because no one knew anything about your mother so we went and tried to track down her homeland with little to no luck. We ended up going to a Witch that we had saved the year prior who directed us to a small town that protected Supernaturals. Crimson Springs. It took us five months to find this place but when we did we met Viho Wendell.”
“My grandfather?” Xander gasped.
Dad nodded. “The town was his doing which meant he was very conscious of newcomers. We told him our story but he only would allow your mother into the town but of course she wouldn't go without me. So Viho gave me a condition that would allow me to stay. I was to use my status with the Hunters to free a large group of Supernatural and only then would we be free to stay.”
“And you agreed?” Ellie asked looking between our parents.
“I didn't really have a choice. I wanted to keep you all safe, so yes I went and freed the group. But it didn't end there. When I showed up there were more then either of us expected and well….”
No one spoke for a moment waiting for him to go on but when he didn't I stood and went to his side.
“Dad? You okay?”
“He’ll be fine.”
Mom pulled his head to her chest, small white flowers that looked like mini cherry blossoms began blooming along her body, a sort of mist surrounding them not spreading any further.
Mom kissed his forehead as Dad fell asleep. “Your father's friend and partner, who helped us before we came here, who even knew what I was and just like your father thought it was wrong what was being done to Supernaturals, he came to our aid. But during that mission his friend was gravely injured by an explosion that was set up in secret just in case any Supernatural escaped.”
Everyone grew silent my gaze found Xander's and on quiet cue he came to stand next to me, his hand resting on my arm.
Mom brushed Dad's hair back. “Your father took a unnecessary injury trying to save us all… so he doesn't remember the incident and when asked he goes quiet.”
“But no one died right?” Kamila asked gripping Ellie's hand.
Mom shook her head. “Besides your father and his friend everyone made it out unscathed. Forty two people were saved.”
“What did Dad do that caused this?” I asked.
She frowned and her grip on Dad tightened. “He tapped into his Hunter power and over used it. I… I couldn't help because of the smoke, he told me to help his friend and everyone else.”
“Why didn't anyone else help?” Jamie whispered as we learned this dark secret.
“Because they were children.”
What!
We all had major different reactions but they were all shock and disbelief.
Xander recovered first. “Children? Every single one?”
“Yes to this day we still don't know why but every child was a Natural. And that's why I missed helping you father, I had just gotten everyone out when one of the kids told me that he was still in there. But then he was by my side laughing that we did it before he passed out.” She looked up with a strained smile. “I got everyone back to Crimson Springs and all the children were returned to their families. Your father and his friend both healed. His friend went back to the Hunters and told them that your father died in the fire, thus the last time your father worked with the Hunters. After that, Viho gave him the task of protecting the town and we've been here ever since.”
That wasn't how I thought my parents moved here yet while it did explain some things it didn't others.
Looking up I found Ellie looking at me too, we nodded and turned to Mom.
“Mom this means we're Supernaturals too?”
She nodded. “It does. Yet I'm afraid we don't know what that means for you.”
“What do you mean?”
“You both are the product of a rare hybrid and a Hunter. No one knows what you can do.”
“So we’re Naturals with no powers?”
“We don’t know. When you were born- the Witch we first went to- said it could be dangerous if you used your powers if you had any too early. So she taught us a way to keep them hidden and at the same time keep you from prying eyes-”
“Wait, people are after us?” I gasped out.
“We don't know but if people found me then they could find you.” Mom looked away. “Don't be mad with us… we're sorry for not telling you both but it was the only way to keep you safe… even from yourselves.”
Silence filled the room while everyone waited for Ellie and my reactions.
My mind reeled at everything that had been revealed today, it was so much information my brain was close to short circuiting from it all.
My parents, friends and most of the town were magical, because of my parents I and Ellie were as well. But it wasn't like they lied to us… they just didn't tell us, almost like hiding a birthday present. You know its there waiting to be opened but you had to wait till it was time. I wasn't mad with them- anyone really I was just more curious on how this society worked but that could wait.
“Well I'm not mad,” Ellie said standing. “Because now you don't have to hide at home anymore.”
“Yeah, she's right Mom. You and Dad can be yourselves and we can talk about magic and your past. Heck you can teach us magic!”
Mom's eyes were wide before large tears filled them.
“Oh my sweetlings.” She opened her arms wide, though Dad was still asleep we all hugged.
