Candice Emmelton was looking at pictures of her own on her cellphone - except that it did not belonged to her - and then she accidentally drops it.
'What the hell was that for?' exclaims Janice Emmelton as she drove on the mountainous roads on her ford pickup truck.
'Sorry it must have slipped through my fingers.' Candice quickly picks up her elder sister's phone from the front passenger seat that she is now sitting on.
'You are still thinking about mum isn't it?' asked Janice.
'Yah you know I still misses her from time to time'.
'Well...I am sure mum doesn't want us to think so much about her now...but to move on.'
'And that's why I am here - for as long as my college break can spare - how is papa?'
'He seldom talk so much these days since mum was gone. And he always comes home late too. But he isn't drunk or something like that...just peculiar that he is always to himself. But I am sure he will be happy to see your bunny face again.'
The sisters giggled for a moment as they pass through the gravel road with the signboard that reads - Albudeen Town - 1 mile.
'What's changed since I left?'
'Nope...nothing much has changed...except that we have more handsome guys in town now.'
The sisters giggled again as they can now see the townscape looming across the white capped mountains. It’s just the start of spring and the sun looks to set in 2 hours’ time across the gloomy skies.
'Can we stop at the florist for a moment? I would like to buy some flowers.'
'Ohh...are they for me?'
'Ha-ha your husband will be jealous of me if I bought them for you, besides they are for mum anyway.'
'Nah he will be alright if you just buy 1 stalk for me.'
As they approach the town, Candice can see familiar sights again from her childhood past. There is that old Uncle Ben's coffeehouse across the street that used to serve the best latte in town, Mike's Mechanic is just up around the corner from Abelie's Bakery house. There were some stores that she couldn't recall, probably new shop lots and then that Misses Halloway pasta restaurant with a large Closed signboard on its front, cordoned with police tapes and a few deputies who seems to be questioning the owner at the pavement.
'What happened at…'
'You mean Misses Halloway diner? Nobody knows for sure, everybody is speculating that Misses Halloway is missing but I guess dad will know for sure - why don't you ask him again when we meet him.'
‘Missing? Sigh… I am dying for her pasta right now actually.' recalled Candice.
'And here we are - the florist.' exclaims Janice as she found a sweet parking spot right at the front.
'Lucky you...I usually can't get to park in here, what’s with the good luck today?' Candice elder sister winks at her.
'I know what you are thinking sis -'
The sisters broke into laughter again. As Candice got out of the pickup truck, she couldn't recall the florist looking like it was - before she left the town for higher studies near the city.
'Strange...since when the florist has changed to Richfold? I remembered it was Lanoe Lane back then.'
'Much has changed since you have left sis...no one knows for sure where Lanoe went? I heard that she left in a hurry and transfer her business to Richfold now, yet some says she disappeared instead.'
'Well let’s find out inside shall we?' suggested Candice.
'Sure! Right after you - after all you are buying.'
Candice tries to poke at her elder's sister ribs as she swiftly avoids it with a chuckle. They then approach the front of the flower store, there were many types of flowers for sale - orchids, lilies, daisy's, sunflowers, morning glory and of course roses. Candice picks up a few stalks of white roses while her sister hints at her at the red ones.
'Fine - make it 3 stalks then.'
'You are the best sis!'
'You're welcomed!' the sisters giggled again - an apparent close bonding between the two.
'Ok we have everything we need for now - let’s get these flowers wrapped up.' Candice approaches the counter - seeing no one she press the bell and waited...still no sign of the cashier. Janice got impatient and proceed to slam the bell many more times annoyingly.
'That's enough - I am sure someone heards th-'
'Well hello my ladies'. A tall dark skinned slender woman with a long black dress suddenly pops out from behind them - the sisters almost jumped from the shock.
'Sorry I don't mean to startle you both. My name is Anna...Anna Richfold.'
'It's ok...Anna - nice to meet you too...can you wrap this all up for us?' Janice queries impatiently.
'Sure thing.' Anna grabs the bouquet of flowers from them and proceed to wrap them up as fashionably as she could.
'Are you the new owner in here?' Candice ventured.
'Ah yes - you mean what happened to old Lanoe Lane? she's getting too old for this sort of job you know - she told me she needed a nice place to retreat up the mountains and therefore - she decided to retire for good and so she pass on this business to me thereafter.' said Anna casually as she cuts the ribbons graciously that wraps the flowers.
'You know it’s getting dark real soon and I can't really see clearly in the dark while I am driving,' hinted Janice for the florist to be swifter.
'Of course not, especially not for a pregnant lady like yourself. How long more before you are due?'
'Just a couple of weeks more and hopefully I will be getting ready to pop him out by then.' The sisters stared at each other in anticipation.
'Congratulations indeed...where is your husband by the way?'
'You mean Alex? He is away now for a business trip but he will be back soon for my delivery.'
'Oh let’s hope he is...shame on him if he missed such an important ordeal from his wife. Anyway here...let me give you something special to celebrate your special occasion soon.'
'Oh thank you indeed...can I have the red roses please?'
'Sure thing Mrs...?'
'Just call me Janice.'
Anna blushes again. 'What a lovely name.'
'And here is my sister - Candice, the white flowers are for our mum though...it’s been 8 years since she passed.'
'Oh my…my sincerest apologies to you both.'
'It's ok...we have gotten over it and move on by now.' said Candice confidently.
'Now I am sure you both have. Life is always filled with mysterious ways of living.'
'Yes indeed ma'am and how much do we owe you?' Candice prodded - eager to get home soon as well.
'Like I said it’s on the house - only for today though.' Anna lets go a large grin.
'Thank you so much Anna!' both the sisters said in synchronicity.
'You're most welcomed. Now you girls better get along - I see the sun is about to set soon.'
'See you again misses Richfold.' Janice said with enthusiasm holding her nicely wrap bunch of Rosses.
'Please...just call me Anna will do.'
The girls wave goodbye at Anna and hurried along back to their vehicle.
'What a lovely lady isn't she?' said Janice as she held up the roses to her nose and smells them intently.
'Yes indeed...what a truly lucky day for us.' Candice adds on as her sister starts the truck and they drove off towards the mountains singing happily as the skies begins to darken.
