Jonas
Jonas walked Sky all the way up to the door, rather jovial in conversation as the subject changed on a dime. Sky made him promise to call him again once he got home safely and Jonas did as soon as he stepped through the door, dodging Nick's doting and questioning as he stepped inside the penthouse.
"Nick let him alone," David said, beckoning him to rejoin him on the couch, "he just got home and he's probably tired."
"It's almost one o'clock in the morning." Nick glared at David as he sat down beside him.
"Can you guys be quiet, I'm kinda on the phone with someone," Jonas said, peeking around the corner only to be met with Nick's incredulous scowl.
"Us quiet down? You have a lot of explaining to do-"
"Dad, I'm serious," Jonas stopped to put his phone on mute, "it's a friend of mine and they're really upset right now. I just got through walking them home and they wanted me to call them once I made it here."
"Alright then," David said, pressing play on their movie only for Nick to snatch up the controller and pause it again.
"Is this friend of yours that boy you were telling us about yesterday?" Nick asked, frowning at Jonas from where he sat on the couch leaning into David.
"Why are you friends with him, he was twenty minutes late to your date?" David added, incredulous.
"They went on a date? Why didn't I know about this?"
"Could you two hush for like, five seconds I'm still kinda on the phone. And I didn't tell you cause David bugged me enough about it for the both of you, now could you please?" Jonas turned his phone back off mute, rushing down the hall into his room before his parents could say anything else to him. Putting his phone up to his ear Jonas said, "Hey Schuyler, I'll have to call you back tomorrow it's getting late and you really need some sleep after tonight."
"To be honest, I'd be cool just talking to you, Jonas," Sky said back, Jonas couldn't help but imagine the smile he had on his face that definitely followed the statement.
There was no way Jonas would let himself lose sleep over this man. There was simply no way but then again there was no chance that Jonas would ever end the call considering the state of mind Sky was in when he first called him.
"Okay then, uh... What do you wanna... talk about?" Jonas mumbled, pulling his covers back before climbing into his bed, not caring that he wasn't dressed in his night clothes.
"I don't know- what do you ride the bus for in the mornings?" Sky said almost absentmindedly.
"School.
"Oh. That's uh... cool..."
"I'm in college you ding bat. I'm nineteen and currently working towards a geology major."
"Hey, it's not my fault you're like five three and look sixteen."
"First of all, I'm five eleven. Two, if you thought I looked sixteen why did you still agree to lunch with me."
"I do my lame day job at a coffee shop that doesn't pay much and up until an incident with this really creepy guy with a mustache I used to be an Uber driver. I'm in no position to turn down free food."
"You were an Uber driver?"
"You're five eleven?"
"How are you just gonna turn things back around to me?"
"I'm sorry but I can't see it. You're not five eleven. No way."
Snorting Jonas ran his hand down his face. "Fine. I'm five nine."
"Knew it! But you're in college. What's that like?"
"It's... okay."
"Just okay?"
"If I'm being honest I don't know what I'm doing. I'm actually considering dropping out but my Dad and Pops would never approve."
"What do you mean you're dropping out? Jonas you can't do that, take it from me."
"You dropped out?" Jonas squinted at the ceiling.
"I never went- but Jonas seriously, I think you should stay."
"You need to go to bed," Jonas stated.
"Nah, you're just mad that I'm right. It'd be better to finish off college while you're ahead, that way if you change your mind about what you want to do then you'll still have something to fall back on." Sky paused for a moment before saying, "Good night."
"Night," Jonas sighed, relaxing in his mound of thick covers, "see you tomorrow I guess. Try not to crack my phone again."
"How about you try not to give me another bloody nose."
"Hey you did that to yourself, I could have picked the phone up without your help. But whatever, good night and go to sleep."
Sky let out a soft chuckle before saying okay, hanging up soon after. Maybe he was right but that didn't change how Jonas felt. From the way he was joking around Jonas could only assume that Sky was starting to feel a bit better now but that didn't garuntee that he'd feel that way tomorrow.
Jonas didn't remember falling asleep but he woke up a little earlier than usual, the sun barely rising over the city skyline. Jonas could already smell the coffee as he walked down the hall, pictures if eleven year old him smiled down at him as he passed.
David was the one rummaging through cabinets, munching on bag of chips as he waited for the last few drops of coffee to finish brewing. His hair was a mess, flying in all sorts of directions as he grabbed a mug out of the cupboard.
"Can you fix me some?" Jonas asked, eyes glued to his phone's screen as he pulled down a list of snap chat notifications. Almost all were from the stupid group chat Jill had added him to but one mentioned needing help studying for a pop quiz. It took Jonas a second to realize that it wasn't from the group chat but was a private message sent directly to him.
"Isn't this that Liam guy?" he mumbled to himself, pulling a stool out in front of the island.
Squinting at his screen he sent a quick hey before flicking it back off. He was surprised he didn't have any messages from Jill. He'd give it till noon, she'll blow his phone up with questions about where he ran off to last night.
David set a mug down in front of him with a soft thump. Muttering his thanks Jonas absentmindedly took a sip, picking his phone back up to call Sky putting it on speaker so he could fix himself a bowl of cereal. The phone rang three times before Schuyler answered with a boisterous, "Hey, I was just about to call you."
"I assume you're doing fine," Jonas said, snatching the jug of milk out of the fridge.
"Yep. You're up early. It's Saturday," Sky said, a soft chuckle escaping him.
"It's ten, that's not early. And what are you doing up so early since you're so worried about me?" Jonas raised a brow at his phone, strolling back to the island with a bowl filled to the brim with cereal.
"I still have work."
"Oh. Well, where do you work?"
"I work at this little dinner downtown, if you come by I'll lie and say your my cousin so you can get a family discount."
"Nah, I'm good." Jonas shook his head, smiling to himself as he shoved a spoonful into his mouth. "I'm glad you're okay though. You kinda scared me late night."
"I did? Well... I apologize for that... I was just- I wasn't myself. I owe you."
"For the cookies?"
A pause. Jonas couldn't help but frown at his phone after a solid five seconds of silence passed.
"Yeah, the cookies."
"But you're already taking me out to eat."
"Well I'm not doing anything after work so I figured if you're free this afternoon I could, oh I dunno, pay you back sooner."
Jonas couldn't help but smile at his phone. "I don't know... When do you get off?"
"At like, eight."
"So we're having lunch? At eight? Just lunch?"
"If you want it to be just lunch then yeah, we'll just have lunch. At eight."
"But eight?"
"Why do you keep saying it like that?"
"Cause the number itself just sounds... scandalous."
"You're weird. I hope you know that."
"Says the guy who likes coconut cake."
"Don't come for me like that ever again!"
"Whatever weirdo."
Jonas jumped at the sound of snickering coming from the hall before looking back and seeing David come strolling back into the kitchen.
Face flushed he grabbed his phone. "Uh, I'll call you back."
"Okay. So it's you. Me. Lunch. At eight."
"Yeah. I'll be there," Jonas said, adding in a quick, "see you" before ending the call.
David set his now empty coffee mug into the sink before turning around to smirk at him. "I call dibs on not telling Nick."
