I tossed my rumpled paper bag lunch onto the table and sat with a sigh. My twin brother sat on the other side.
He snorted and raised an eyebrow with his only piercing at my lack of enthusiasm. “What’s wrong sis? The lovely student body giving you fits?”
My brother and I aren’t identical twins, I know that’s a duh moment, but I really think he got all the cool parts of our birth. His eyes are ocean teal. I kid you not. Teal. So we dyed his hair to match. He got the height, defined chiseled features, and cool brooding stare. All I got was an oval face that made me look plump even though I was underweight. It really sucked. I tried to make up for it with attitude. Fake it till you make it, that’s my motto.
“Yep. That sums it up nicely, thanks Chill.” After a playground incident when my brother was eight, he refused to go by Achilles. I could relate. If I could find a way to shorten Athena so it sounded cool, I so would do it in a heartbeat. Sadly, this meant he didn’t get the god/goddess jokes the way I did. It’s a pity really. Chill is all sorts of… well… chill. I’m always ready to put someone through a wall, so it really should be the other way around. People teasing him tend to stop quickly because he just laughs along.
I rub a hand over my face and tug open my lunch bag. I pull out a baloney sandwich and make a face. Chill just laughs and pushes his bag towards me. I gladly hand him his gross food and peek in the bag he gave me. “Oh thank the gods!” I say under my breath. Chill laughed again. Of course he heard me. I pulled out a chocolate hazelnut and marshmallow fluff sandwich and gratefully took a bite. Heaven is Marshmallow fluff and chocolate.
After we ate silently for a bit, Chill started telling me of his day. Of course, his day went much better than mine. The girls fell over themselves to flirt with him and the guys all asked him to hang out after school.
“You know the guys just want a chance at the girls who are flirting with you. They probably figure that once you pick someone, they can console the rest.” I pointed out.
Chill just shrugged, “I know. If they realized how much of a geek I really was, they’d probably all run away screaming.” He grinned. “Just let me have my MMORPG’s and Manga and I’m good. Find me a geeky girl that can keep up and I’ll marry her right now.”
I laughed. He wasn’t joking about how geeky he was. I loved that about him. It was probably why he’s still my best friend. “Well you can’t find one if you don’t look bro.”
He shrugged again and his dimples pushed in the sides of his face. Yes. I said dimples. Life really wasn’t fair. “We’re seventeen, sis. I have all the time in the world. I’m pretty sure you’ll find someone first.”
“Ha. No, not happening at this school.” I gave him an eye roll and added a second to show I was serious.
