Jonas
"Okay Sky, where are you right now?" Jonas asked, breathing in the chilly night air as he stepped out the doors of the apartment building. His worry was starting to get to him as Sky took his time answering his question.
"I'm by the bridge on the north side of town," Sky groaned, sniffing again as Jonas came to stand under a stop sign.
"That's not too far from where I am, we can uh... we can meet up near Strawberry and Oak," Jonas said, nodding to himself as he waited for a car to go by.
"That's where that vendor who sells churros is set up during the day, right?" Sky asked.
"Yeah, that corner. He's probably not out here now but there's a small shop not too far from there, it doesn't close till about thirty minutes, we could stop there and get you some cake or something to make you feel better."
"Mhm."
Biting his bottom lip Jonas looked both ways before jogging across the street. "Sky I need you to talk to me, uh, tell me your favorite sweets."
"Why do you want to know?"
"So when we get to the bakery I'll know what kind of cake to get you."
"Why do you wanna feed me sweets so bad? I feel fat enough already."
"You're not fat, and besides chocolate fixes everything. Or at least that's what my Pops says, I don't really like chocolate unless I'm eating brownies." Jonas smiled to himself as he neared the street corner.
"I'm allergic to chocolate."
Snorting Jonas said, "That must suck."
"Major ass, yeah. It's all good though cause my mom used to always set aside coconut cake just for us every Christmas."
"Coconut cake?" Jonas grimaced, looking up just in time to see Sky rounding the corner and stopping next to the stop sign. Taking his phone down from his ear Jonas shouted, "Are you serious. Dude, coconut cake is disgusting!"
Looking up Sky watched Jonas near him with raised brows and red rimmed eyes. Giving him a wry smile Sky said, "It's not that bad."
"No, your opinion on coconut cake doesn't count because your judgement is clearly clouded and unreliable. I mean you don't know the joys of marble cake," Jonas said, raising a brow at the other before gesturing towards the shop. "Now come on so we can get you a nice vanilla cake with vanilla icing. None of that weird coconut flake stuff."
"If you want me to be happy you'd get me coconut cake." Sky gave another weak smile, waddling into the shop as Jonas held the door open for him.
"Fine, you can get your own little coconut cake but I'm getting myself a brookie." Jonas smirked.
"What the hell is a brookie?"
"Half brownie half cookie. This place makes those."
Looking a bit incredulous Sky nodded, chuckling softly to himself. So the man wasn't lying, Jonas couldn't help but study every move the man made as they looked through the display cases for a cake, it was much to late to have one made. To Sky's dismay they didn't have coconut cake but they did have peanut butter cookies, something Jonas actually liked, and the two decided to share a whole basket together over light conversation. Jonas didn't wanna treat the man like a glass doll but he was still a little worried though he didn't know him all too well he had a feeling that wasn't the first time something like this had happened.
"Schuyler, if you don't mind me asking, what happened? Why were you uh... upset?" Jonas asked, breaking a cookie in half before shoving the piece in his mouth.
"It's my dad," Sky said simply, picking up a cookie out of the basket as he shifted in his seat outside the shop, "his birthday was today."
Brows furrowing Jonas leaned forward, "Isn't that something to celebrate or..."
"No I figured I'd go down there this weekend to see him, that maybe we could put what happened last year behind us but he... I called him and he told me things would be better without me there."
"What- why would he say that?" Jonas caught himself too late. "I'm sorry, you probably don't want me asking you this."
"No it's fine. It's nice having someone to talk to, especially now," Sky said, waving Jonas off. "He and I haven't been on good speaking terms since my senior year of high school but I went there last Thanksgiving anyway in the hopes that, again, we could put things behind us."
"Well what happened? You guys got into a fight or something. God why do I keep asking questions." Jonas shoved another cookie into mouth, causing Sky laugh at him.
"No you're fine, I'm glad you came looking for me too. But uh, yeah I guess you could say we got into a fight. My parents didn't really approve of me bringing my boyfriend to dinner and I don't know what I was thinking. I gue- I was hoping that they'd realize it wasn't just some weird phase I was going through and I'd talked to them prior to the event and told my mom about Tyler, my ex, that he was a nice guy and that I wanted them to meet him. We had been dating for almost a year at that time so yeah, I really wanted them to approve of him."
"But they didn't," Jonas mumbled, feeling his own heart sink for the man.
"Yeah, my dad tried I'll give him that. I ca- I could tell he was really trying his best for me but then my niece saw us holding hands under the table and she... She started asking questions like little kids do and I explained to her that Tyler and I were boyfriends and my dad blew up at me. He kept saying she was too young to understand things like that, that I shouldn't be doing things like that around the kids and I argued that he and Mom showed one another affection around the little ones all the time and he tried to argue that it wasn't the same."
"How is that not the same? No offense, but your dad sounds like an asshole," Jonas said curtly.
"It's fine. But yeah, we got to arguing and I stormed off, made my mother cry and my older sister left not too long after. She's the main one who's been supportive of me since I moved out, my younger brother and sister couldn't really say much I mean, they need a place to stay. But, I was just upset cause all I wanted to do was at least be there for my father and my brother's birthday, they're born the same day, but apparently I'm not needed there."
"If it makes you feel any better he's the one missing out I mean we're eating on some awesome peanut butter cookies from the best bakery on this side of town and what's he doing, sitting around being mopy on his own birthday. You may think he's not thinking about you but trust me, he is, otherwise he wouldn't have been petty enough to even answer your call." Getting up Jonas snatched up the box of cookies before holding his arm for Sky to link his to. "Come on, let's get you home."
"Oh, so you're walking me home now. How romantic," Sky quipped, taking his time getting up out of his seat.
"Are you doing that on purpose," Jonas muttered, trying his best to put aside that weird fluttery feeling in his stomach as he linked his arm with Sky's.
"Doing what," the man said, blue eyes holding Jonas' as he licked his lips before they spread into a smile.
"Nothing, just come on." Jonas shook his head, yanking Sky all the way on to his feet before marching down the street.
"Hey Casanova," Sky chuckled, stopping them both at the corner.
"What?"
"My apartments the other way."
"Right... I knew that."
"Sure you did."
Rolling his eyes Jonas let out a sigh before saying, "I'm really sorry about you and your dad."
"It's fine, you don't have to apologize for that. He's the one who doesn't know what he's missing out on remember?" Sky said, stumbling into Jonas a little bit as they stepped off the curb to cross the street.
"I know but, I just felt like I should say it you know. Things weren't so great with my dad either..." Jonas found himself saying, finding a common ground between the two of them and desperately grabbing hold of it.
"What do you mean, I thought you had two dads, which by the way makes you sound pretty greedy. Like, share some of those good parenting skills with rest of us."
"Good parenting?" Jonas snorted, raising a brow at Sky.
They stopped one they reached a cross walk. Sky was the one to lean forward and press the button. He tapped on it two more times before finally letting his hand fall back to his side.
"Well, I mean look at you. You're a really nice guy so I'd like to assume they took some part in that," Sky said, gazing down at him with the goofiest smile.
Jonas shook his head. "Yeah I guess but I was actually adopted, or am adopted. My real dad is an asshole. I don't wanna make this into a competition or anything but when my dad found out I was gay he beat the absolute shit out of me. I couldn't walk right for three days. He's in jail now so I don't have to worry about him anymore but sometimes I just wonder what was going through his mind when he found out, why he did the things he did or if he regrets it now that he can't see me like he used to anymore. You know what I mean?"
"Yeah I know what you mean," Sky said softly, watching a car as it slowly drove by.
"Schuyler, are you sure you're gonna be okay at home by yourself? We could hang out together for the rest of the night if you want," Jonas said, genuinely worried for his new friend. It sounded nice now that he thought of it. They were friends.
"No, I'm fine really," Sky said, leading him across the street with a slow gate.
"I'm serious. I just wanna make sure you'll be fine on your own now."
"Well, Jonas, like I said, I'll be fine. Are we still on for dinner next Friday?"
"You're really good at changing the subject. Yes we're still on. You know what, you can pay this time I won't fight you on it."
"What, now you're mad at me?"
"Hey, I bought you some peanut butter cookies, and I paid for lunch today so it's your turn."
"Fair enough. So the date's still on."
"You're totally doing it on purpose now."
