Catching Caleb up on the latest news, Lux talked fast while slowly walking away in an attempt to keep the party moving. Shilo caught the hint, following along with the charade. Sadly for them, Caleb wasn’t that gullible. He stood in front of the two again, forcing their shenanigans to come to an end.
“If you think I’m going to let you take Shilo on this… Adventure… You are mistaken.”
“Let me? Geez, you’re worse than her dad. Last I checked you’re not in charge of her.”
“True. But this is a bad idea. You two on your own are clumsy and foolish. Imagine the damage you could do together?”
Lux was silent for a few moments, leading Shilo to believe that their plan was shot down and she should start heading back home. Big brother Caleb came to rain on their parade…
“You’re right. We’re both unstable kids. Why don’t you come with us and be our look out? Yeah? Okay! Let’s go!”
Lux walked around Caleb, looking proud as ever. Even his pet had an air of superiority.
“Excuse me?”
Shilo looked at Lux, then at Caleb. She shrugged, a smile on her lips as she walked past Caleb as well.
“Don’t be such a grump. Do I have to remind you that you’re a kid too? Live a little.”
He watched the pair walk off together, heading straight to their doom. And Caleb was going to be blamed for it… he groaned, following after them.
“Fine. The minute I sense danger we are done, got it? He was mostly addressing Lux, knowing first hand that he had a problem listening to people. More So than Shilo.
“Got it, got it. Sheesh it’s like pulling teeth to get you to have fun.”
“Oh, yes,” Caleb said in a low, monotone voice. “This is just so fun. Walking in the dark with two mischievous little brats is just so much fun.”
“That’s the spirit.” Shilo gave a light pat on Caleb’s back, happy with the little trio they had going on.
The group fell pretty silent, mostly due to Caleb insisting that they remained quiet because they were literally sneaking around the city. Shilo had initially thought they would be heading into town, but instead they were traveling farther and farther from civilization. The only problem was that they were heading closer to the forest. The forest wasn’t off limits, it was just…
A little dangerous.
Shilo wasn’t used to going into the forest without her dad, in the dark, with an irresponsible halfling leading the way. It seemed like a bad idea, and apparently Caleb thought the same thing. As Lux was about to enter the forest Caleb had to speak up.
“Hold it. You never said we’d be going in the forest. It’s not safe to wander after dark. Especially if we are not keeping to the trail.” Lux turned to see that Caleb stopped walking. And so did Shilo.
“What? Did you expect The Council to stay at the inn? Come on, these are high profile people. They’re staying somewhere a little more secretive.
“How do you know?” Caleb asked the question Shilo had been pondering since she was told about this hidden location.
“I have my sources.” Lux was dancing around the question, as usual. He was a bit of a mole. He always knew things he wasn’t supposed to know. Sure it meant trouble, but to Shilo it just meant more fun. This time it didn’t feel all that fun.
“Lux, I told you I’m on thin ice with my dad. If he found out I went into the forest alone at night he’d be furious.”
“Then we better not get caught. Caleb, you can sense danger a mile away. Let’s just head in and find this place. You’ll be our look out! Once things get too tense you signal us and we scram.”
It was a bad idea. A bad idea all around. Despite everything, Shilo felt more at ease with Caleb by their side. She took the sleeve of his jacket in an attempt to lead him into the forest.
“You’re here so I feel safer. We’ll make it quick.”
Caleb didn’t move, no matter how hard Shilo tugged. But they had a point.. He could easily stop things if it got too crazy. He sighed and eventually caved, walking into the forest with Shilo.
“I’m dragging you out kicking and screaming once I sense danger.”
