We started Purity for one core reason: Anomalies are dangerous.
Books and movies like to make it seem as if these magical powers are so fantastical and brilliant, but in reality they are terrifying. The things that these Anomalies could do, especially when they were out of control, were absolutely terrifying. The destruction they would cause in their wake was just too much.
Purity was established to move the world forwards and contain the Anomaly threat; to make sure that we could all live in peace once more. I didn’t want to kill Anomalies, that was not my intention. It was just an unfortunate byproduct of what Purity was hoping to achieve!
That’s probably the reason why Purity has received such a bad reputation over the years. No matter how many times I promise that we don’t mean to kill anyone, nobody believes me! It’s ridiculous! How could this company have gone completely out of my control? All I wanted was to stop Anomalies from hurting others, not to kill them!
But who would believe me now?
We’ve made a living hunting down these people, killing them, putting them in cages, torturing them, experimenting on them. After the first few captures, I stopped visiting the containment cells. It hurt me to see these people, one of them as young as 14, trapped behind glass walls, poked and prodded with needles.
It’s guilt, I think. Guilt. I remember feeling proud as the numbers in Purity grew. It was a sign that we were destined for great things, a sign that we were doing the world a favour and doing our job right. It was a sign that there were plenty of people willing to dedicate their lives to our cause because they too believed in it; in us.
I wanted Purity to stand for the purity of spirit, purity of knowledge, purity of our humanity. But now we’ve divided the world into humans and Anomalies. We were meant to do good. We were meant to bring peace, finally, to this damn world.
Maybe I should have picked a better name other than ‘Purity’.
I sit behind my desk and bargain for Anomaly registration, fighting for a future where nobody has to be killed on either side. There’s blood on my hands; human blood, Anomalous blood. People dying in hopes of fighting for a better future; a future that I have promised but still cannot deliver. Nobody will believe me when I say that I’m trying. I’m working towards a better future for all of us, where Anomalies are monitored and supported by the government instead of cast aside into the fringes of society. I want to create a world where the humans and anomalies were in harmony, but instead we have started a senseless war with senseless death.
I wanted to do good. I wanted to make the world a better place.
But you know what they say. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
