Surprisingly, I don't take that long to pack all my gear. And it usually doesn't, but all my stuff is packed so I thought it would take some time to sift through all the boxes.
Typically, I'm a very disorganized packer, but this time I think I did a pretty good job of it. I even labeled all my stuff-or maybe mom did that. Either way, I still felt accomplished. Maybe this is a sign that today won't go over as bad as I think it will.
I have about a half an hour before practice starts. And even though its only about a five-minute drive to school I still want to leave about now.
As I put my bag in my car I mentally go over my checklist of things I might need: My soccer cleats, two bottles of water, and my regular clothes-i didn't want to get undressed in front of everyone, so I was already dressed in my athletic gear.
Driving to school I put on some music, hoping to drown out all the voices in my head telling me to turn around so as to not avoid any potential embarrassment.
Getting to school, a whole new set of problems seemed to apparate from thin air. I pull into the school parking lot and realize I don't know where the teams meeting up. I was about to start freaking out when I realized I could text Tiff. So I go into my contacts and find her name, before texting her.
Outgoing message: To Tiff
Hey, I'm at the school. Where do I need to go?
Incoming message: From Tiff
Everyone is in the locker room rn but we'll be outside by the track after you can come in to change and put your stuff down.
I texted her thank you before making my way to the locker room to put my bag away. I head towards the gym and walk inside.
Once inside the gym, I head towards the girl's locker room and stand outside for about a minute. I had to mentally prepare myself before.
After taking a few deep breaths, I pull the door open and walk inside.
Immediately I see Tiff at the far end of the locker room. I wave at her before putting my bag down on a bench.
I stood around awkwardly for a few seconds, not knowing if I should go up to Tiff while she's still getting dressed. That is until she waved me over.
"Hey, I'm glad you could make it," She says as she finishes getting changed.
"I am too"
"So, you've played soccer before?" One of the girls around Tiffany asked.
"Uh, yeah I played a little back at my old school."
Tiff nudges me toward the exit and we go outside to the track. Once we get outside Tiff introduces me to her friends.
"This is Haydee," she gestures toward a short girl with light brown skin and black hair, who smiled at me, "And this is Joianna," The tall blonde glares at me.
"Don't worry, she's a lot nicer than she looks," Tiff says, wrapping her arm around my shoulder. I smile before turning to introduce myself.
"Hi, I'm Amelia" Joianna scowls.
"Yeah, we know." Yeah, really nice.
Tiff was about to say something to Joianna when who I assume is the coach calls for attention. A man with quite possibly the widest set of shoulders I've ever seen walks out onto the track.
"Alright, everybody listen up, today's try out is going to be pretty short but hopefully I'll have the list of the new team up by the end of the week."
"WHAT!!" I whisper-screamed to Tiff, "I thought you said you guys were still doing intramurals."
Tiff frowns, " I thought it was, guess I had the dates mixed up," she shrugs going back to listening to the coach.
"We're going to split everyone up into teams and play a few rounds of mini-games, but first I'm gonna have you warm up with ten laps around the track." He blows his whistle and everyone gets up and starts jogging around the track.
I get up and Tiff and her friends follow, "Listen I think I'm gonna go." Tiff stops walking and pulls me aside from the group.
"You guys go ahead," she turns to me, "Why are you leaving?"
I shrug, "I don't know, I just don't think I'm ready for that kind of pressure."
"Why though, I mean you could just treat it like any other practice," she smiles reassuringly, "Alright? This doesn't have to be a big deal if you don't make it one."
I nod along, "Okay okay, I'll stay."
"Great, Great. Okay well, we got like five laps left before we start so let's go."
We spend the next five minutes doing the laps before the coach starts to divide us up into mini-teams of seven people to play a short five-ten minute game.
About a hundred girls showed up to try out for the team and Tiff and I were at the very end so it was a while before the coach split us up.
"Alright, Tiff, Sarah, Kylie, Sam, Ericka, Lily and uh, looks like you guys will be one short," He reads from his clipboard.
"Oh, Coach Barnson, we have a seventh person. This is Amelia, she came last minute. Hope that's okay." Tiff calls out.
"Yeah, she'll just need to give me her name. Alright, let's get started."
We go out onto the field and split up into teams and positions.
"What position does she play?" A girl with flaming red hair in a very tight ponytail asked Tiff.
"Oh yeah, what do you play?" Tiff turns my way.
"I was a keeper"
"Alright well then you can do that and everyone already knows what they're doing, right?" Everyone nods and we break to start the game. I go over to the goal and wait.
Once the started, it was as if I was on autopilot and the only I cared about in those moments was not letting the ball past me.
One of the girls on my team with short blue hair passed the ball to a short girl with a tattoo going up her arm and she ran it down the field and shot- and scored- the goal.
The whole game basically went like this and I only had one out of the twelve goals shot at me. Which, I think, is pretty good. Once we finished the coach asked to talk to me.
I walk over to the bench where he was sitting, "You wanted to talk to me?"
"I need you're name and proof of a full physical if you want to be considered to be on the team." He said without looking up.
"Oh um, when do you need it by?"
"Friday is when I plan to put up the list of girls on the team. So tomorrow is the only time I'll accept it."
That's not enough time to get an appointment and physical. No doctor would take an appointment so early.
"Can I use documents from a previous physical?"
"As long as it's less than a year old."
I nod along to what he's saying and make to go home.
"Hey" I turn around.
"Yeah"
The coach smiles, "I really hope you can get that physical into me by the end of tomorrow. I think you have a great chance of making it on the team."
"Don't worry, I will."
I make my way to the parking lot with a skip in my step. This is the happiest I've felt since moving here. I make it to my car and drive home in what seemed to be record time.
Once again, my mom is not home to hear the good news. Seems like I'll never see her with her new job. I contemplate calling to talk to her but decide against it in favor of taking a nap. I make it upstairs and crash on my bed without taking a shower.
I fall asleep thinking about being on the soccer team, and what it would be like to be on it.
