When he was underground he had always ran from fights. The rest of the time he preferred making deals than fight, and his brother called him a coward despite not understanding how truly strong he was. It made their relationship really rocky because Vicious thought of his brother as a defenseless weakling and constantly badgered trying to get him into fighting. Chopper never did though, he always ported out of situations like that or took the abuse. Secondly he never told anyone about the resets, and when switching over to the next timeline… That became a big wedge between him and his brother. Instead of fighting which Chopper had begrudgingly grown used to, his brother distanced himself. And then there was the realization that once his brother was no longer wanting to talk or forgive him, that Chopper was all alone - and this universe didn’t bare his friends. There was no angry as fuck Undyne, or passive aggressive Alphys. Asgore and Toriel, Nastyblook, not even the asshole bartender he bantered angrily with and was in debt with was around. No one he knew to turn to, and he couldn’t, no he just couldn’t talk to his brother.
So he started drinking. A lot. But the more he drank and let this hole get bigger, separating him and his brother and everything and everyone who would willingly become his friend, the more he sank into depression. He had put himself in the situation, but he couldn’t face himself going back - he couldn’t stand the idea. Not because of pride, but fear. So instead of apologizing to his brother, or trying to befriend these new people, or even trying to get back home to where familiar faces he knew and trusted were - he ran. He just kept running away from his problems, and drinking, fucking and working away to keep from thinking about his situation. But even with him staying busy, his nights were filled with the manifestations of his fears. No matter how far he ran, that won’t just disappear.
