Charlotte walked down the street with Victoria next to her. They asked people around them if they had heard of the bookstore, but no one had any idea. She rubbing her cheek in thought when Victoria asked a few more people.
"What?" Victoria asked surprised as a woman laughed. Charlotte looked over and saw a shorter woman with curly caramel colored hair standing next to Victoria. Her clothes were looser than the style called for, and the colors in her dress looked a bit faded.
"I'm Madame Chrysanthemum," the woman informed. Charlotte walked over as Victoria grinned.
"We've been looking for your bookstore everywhere. It seems that no one knows where it is," Victoria exhaled, relieved to have found her.
"I'm not surprised. It isn't the best shop, but it gets the job done," Madame Chrysanthemum smiled. "Why are you two looking for it?"
"We were, um, looking for a specific book," Charlotte answered.
"I see, well, I was on my way to open up if you would like to accompany me. I can help you what you're looking for there," the woman offered. Charlotte nodded, letting her lead the way. Victoria followed beside Charlotte as they continued down the street.
It was interesting to travel with Madame Chrysanthemum because of the lack of attention the public gave her. Charlotte and Victoria each greeted many people who greeted them first, while no one paid the woman any mind. Charlotte wondered why, but pushed the thoughts from her head. She had to remain focused about what she was there to do.
After nearly fifteen minutes of walking, they arrived at a rundown bookstore. Charlotte was surprised to see the building could still stand. The brick wall had a small wave to it as the door frame was so skewed, the door couldn't sit in it. However, Madame Chrysanthemum hardly seemed mind as she walked up to it.
"Come on in," she smiled before disappearing inside. Charlotte and Victoria exchanged worried glances, but both followed Madame Chrysanthemum inside.
The inside was better taken care off, but not by much. Nearly ever shelf looked like it could fall apart at any moment. Even a breath in the wrong direction could cause a collapse. However, each book looked pristine and new, which surprised Charlotte.
Madame Chrysanthemum walked to her dusty counter and grabbed a smock. As she put it on, she smiled at her new customers.
"So what's this book you're looking for?" Madame Chrysanthemum wondered. Charlotte took out the paper and took a deep breath.
"It's not an ordinary book," Charlotte began, but the woman shook her head and cut her off.
"I'll stop you there. Issac already warned me that you would be by," Madame Chrysanthemum informed before walking around the counter.
"Then why did you ask?" Charlotte asked.
"I didn't know who you were, but that paper in your pocket was all the proof I needed," Madame Chrysanthemum informed. "I didn't get your names, and I want to keep it that way. It'll be safer for you."
"What do you mean?" Victoria asked. Madame Chrysanthemum took a deep breath.
"The work I do can highly illegal, but it is necessary for this city. I work in illegal practices and mainly illegal texts. Which is why I have that book for you, that's all I know on the matter," she informed as she pulled a book off of the shelf.
"Are you a witch at least?" Charlotte wondered.
"Of course I am. I'm breaking the law that heavily. I honestly own this shop, but I smuggle a few things here and there. Which is why you can't tell me your names. The less I know, the better," she informed before handing the large book to Charlotte.
Charlotte took the book, which was lighter than it looked. It was indeed the book that she had been sent to find. Perfecting Communication: A Guide to Communicate with the Dead.
"Is that the right one?" Madame Chrysanthemum asked as Charlotte nodded. "Would you like me to wrap it up for you?"
"I think that would be a good idea," Charlotte whispered. Madame Chrysanthemum nodded, taking the book back. As she walked around the counter again, Victoria decided to look around.
"I hope you aren't hoping to use these practices," Madame Chrysanthemum warned. Charlotte looked up at her, surprised. "While I keep my nose out of other people's business, these practices could tear open the land. Please be careful. I like living."
"I'm not going to use the practices. My parents dabbled in these practices, but I promise I won't touch them," Charlotte informed. Victoria peeked through a shelf for Charlotte's answer before moving on through the books. "How much for it?"
"Nothing. I've been wanting this out of my shop since I found it here," Madame Chrysanthemum informed, handing her back the book. "It appeared on my doorstep a few days ago, and I honestly want nothing to do with it. Issac asking about it was a blessing."
"That's comforting," Charlotte groaned. Madame Chrysanthemum chuckled and shook her head.
"I would urge you to be careful, but I don't know if that's possible with this book. I wish you the best of luck," Madame Chrysanthemum informed, bowing her head. "I also would love to see you two again. I have many options for spell books and the like. If I don't have it, I can get it."
"Thank you," Charlotte smiled, putting the book under her arm. "And thank Issac for me if you see him again."
"Of course. Have a good day," Madame Chrysanthemum smiled, waving as Charlotte and Victoria left the wonky building.
Once outside, Charlotte took a deep breath and looked at her apprentice. Victoria looked a little nervous, but grinned up at her.
"I think we should head for the Bureau. Officer Barker is going to want to know what we found," Victoria suggested.
"I agree. This is more than I thought we would find, especially so easily. I think someone is watching this book," Charlotte whispered as she started walking.
"Do you think they're watching right now?"
"Maybe. I don't think it's a coincidence that the book ended up where I and Issac could find it. The sooner we take to the Bureau, the better."
"Agreed. Should we tell the others that we found it?"
"Let's talk to Barker, and we can go from there," Charlotte offered, grasping the book firmly. Victoria nodded as she looked forward.
"Can we trust the Bureau?"
"Please don't say that. I have a hard enough time dealing with being on the street. We have to trust at least Barker, because I'm not going to be caught with this book by the wrong people."
"Fair point. I'm just worried about the repercussions of this," Victoria sighed.
"I know, but it's our best bet. We'll be fine. We can trust Barker and O'Conner," Charlotte insisted. Even as she said those words, she wasn't sure if she believed them herself. This was a huge risk, but she didn't know what else to do. It was far more dangerous to keep the book than to give it to the Bureau.
