Everyone walked back into the bakery, except for the officers who went back to work. Charlotte sat at the table and read the small slip of paper. It had the name Perfecting Communication: A Guide to Communicate with the Dead and Madame Chrysanthemum's Runes and Relics Bookstore. Charlotte took a deep breath, wondering why he would write down a store name if the book was out of print.
Elizabeth and Victoria came to the table with a few muffins and cups of coffee. Charlotte placed the note on the table and sighed, grateful for the coffee.
"Thanks," Charlotte whispered before taking a sip.
"No problem," Elizabeth answered. She looked over at her fellow student, who placed a hand on Charlotte's wrist.
"Are you okay?" Victoria asked quietly. Lynn and Tyler had gone to talk with Heather so Charlotte could piece everything together.
"Yeah, I think so. I'm just trying to figure this all out," Charlotte answered with a small smile. Victoria nodded, waiting for her to say something. Charlotte shook her head. "I just can't believe that my father would do something like that. My mother, too. It's just so insane."
"I don't think they really understood what they were doing. They probably thought it would be fine to try it. I doubt that book told them that it would dissolve the barriers between worlds," Elizabeth added. Charlotte nodded, knowing that they were just curious.
"What did the note say?" Victoria asked.
"It gave the book name, but said that we should go to Madame Chrysanthemum's Runes and Relics bookstore," Charlotte informed, thinking that the name was a mouth full.
"I don't know where that is," Victoria mumbled.
"I would imagine on the other side of town. I haven't heard of it either," Charlotte reasoned, taking a bite of the muffin. Elizabeth exhaled before she walked over to her sister. Charlotte watched her leave as Victoria sighed.
"Do you think word will get out?"
"I doubt it. Issac kept this secret for this long. As long as we can keep a secret, then we'll be fine. You are also welcome to change mentors if you need to," Charlotte offered. Victoria laughed under her breath.
"As much as you don't want me here, you're stuck with me. Through thick and thin. Besides, someone needs to watch the shoppe when you get dethroned," Victoria chuckled as Charlotte playfully pushed her shoulder.
"That's the meanest thing you've ever said to me. Maybe I should fire you and get a nicer apprentice," Charlotte teased, leaning back in her chair.
"Too late, I've already accepted being a partner. You can't fire me now without a ton of legal work."
"Blasphemy!" Charlotte laughed, making Victoria smile too. "I can't believe that I accepted such a devious student. What was I thinking?"
"I may be devious, but at least I'm good at what I do," Victoria winked as she drank some coffee. Charlotte sighed dramatically as Lynn sat down.
"Hey, how are you holding up?" Charlotte asked her sister.
"Probably about as well as you are right now. Are you going to find that book?" Lynn wondered.
"Well, I'm going to go to the bookstore and see if they know anything. If they don't, then I won't deal with it. If I find the book, then I'm taking it straight to Officer Barker, and they can investigate how they wish. If that means I talk to the Council, then so be it," Charlotte explained as Lynn frowned.
"You can't take it to the Council. They could assume the worst. I don't think you should step foot in that bookstore, to be honest," Lynn insisted. Charlotte sighed before biting her lip in thought. "And I want to remind you that you aren't the only one that could lose everything. You're students could be in jeopardy, as well as my work at Tyler's practice. Tyler may even be affected by this information."
"I want to go to that bookstore, but I'll take O'Conner. He'll help me avoid wrongful accusations," Charlotte amended. Lynn sighed, but nodded.
"That should be okay. Just remember to be careful. If this murderer is linked to that book, you could be next. Please be careful. Please please please please be careful," Lynn pleaded. Charlotte gave a half smile as she grabbed her sister's hand.
"I promise I'll be careful," Charlotte promised.
"I'm coming with you," Victoria informed, realizing that she hadn't said so. Charlotte turned to her and shook her head.
"Absolutely not," Charlotte said firmly.
"Yeah, like you get to dictate my life. Regardless of what you say, I'm going with you. I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and wonder if I still have a job or not," Victoria argued. Charlotte sighed and put her head on the table.
"Why are you so difficult? This isn't a trip to the bookstore," Charlotte grumbled. She was terrified for herself, she didn't need to drag anyone down with her. Victoria just shrugged.
"I figured that much," Victoria informed. "Look, I don't think you need to worry as much about this. I'm not going to mess up anything. I'm not a child. I'm only a year or two younger than you."
"Oh, fine, but don't blame me when things get out of hand," Charlotte warned. Lynn frowned, wondering if this was the correct action to take. With a deep breath and a stroke of courage, Charlotte stood.
"Are we going right now?" Victoria asked, standing up as well.
"Yep," Charlotte answered.
"What about O'Conner?" Lynn reminded. Charlotte drank her coffee down and shrugged.
"Send him my way if you see him. I want to be in and out as quickly as possible. I'll tell O'Conner if I find the book," Charlotte answered. Lynn reluctantly agreed, still uncomfortable with the situation. Elizabeth walked over.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"We're going to check out the bookstore, but you don't have to come. You should stay with your sister. I don't want to drag you into this if I can help it," Charlotte explained. Elizabeth scowled but sighed.
"Stop excluding us, but I agree that three people in a bookstore looking for the same book is memorable. Just trust us a little," Elizabeth asked. Charlotte nodded and agreed.
"I'll let you know what we find if we find anything. I doubt the book will even be there, but at least we can cross this lead off the list," Charlotte informed before leaving. Lynn waved with an irritated look on her face. Tyler sat next to his wife as he waved as well.
