Katie giggled as she put a finger to her lips and looked inside her bag as she sat on the bus with the other kids. Her whole class and teacher was clueless about the creature that was squirming around in her backpack making squeak sounds. She smiled as she petted it's head and they let out a purring sound. Looking out the window she remembered when she found her friend.
Katie was playing outside in the heat of Australia as she kicked her new soccer ball until a sound caught her off guard. She debated on telling her babysitter, but she chose not to and it was a good thing she didn't. When she found a cave she walked til her foot slipped into a hole in the cave she went back home getting water, sandwiches, rope, a flashlight, and her daddy's snake club. Going back once more she climbed down the rope and looked around finding odd stones in the hole she saw one move and walked up to it. That's when she found out they were eggs and not stones she watched as the egg broke and the creature inside squawked at her as it kicked the rest of the way out and looked up at her.
"You must be hungry," she said softly, as she pulled out one of the sandwiches from her backpack she pulled out a tomato, lettuce, ham, and cheese sandwich she pulled off some meat, but it turned it's nose up to it then she pulled off some lettuce. The creature gobbled it all up she feed the creature until it was full she looked at the other eggs, all of them were gone she pouted sadly as she looked at the creature nudging and calling out to the other eggs as if it would wake them up, "I'm sorry, but they aren't going to wake up," she said. It looked crest fallen as it looked up at her. She put the sandwich up and then picked up the creature putting it in the front big pocket of her overalls then she climbed up the rope once up she untied the rope and placed it back in her pack putting the creature on the ground she smiled, "You can go now, be free little one," she said. It looked at her with a tilted head.
Katie headed back down the trail that would take her back home, she heard a twig snap and looked to see she was being followed, "You can't come with me I don't even know what you are," she said, but it just walked up to her leg and nuzzled it. "Alright, but mommy and daddy aren't going to be happy about this," she said, as she walked down the trail with her follower. "Katie! Katie! Katie, where are you?" Katie picked up the creature and walked into the backyard, as her babysitter looked like she was on the edge of panicking, "Hi Courtney," she said, as she pet the little creature in her arms. "Oh thank lord, Katie do you have an-" Courtney said, as she turned, but froze when she saw the creature in the five year old arms, "What is that?" she asked. "My friend, I watched it hatch from an egg in a hole; in a cave behind the house," Katie replied. "Katie put it down and get your father's club for me," Katie tilted her head then she figured it out, "No! I won't let you kill her! She's all alone," Katie shouted covering the creature, with her arms, "You don't even know what it is," Courtney countered, "What if it tries to hurt you?" she asked fearing for the girls safety, "She eats lettuce and hates meat," Katie said, as she glared at her babysitter.
So Katie showed Courtney that her new friend was a vegan so the three sat on the couch, Courtney was looking up anything she could about the creature, but all she found were dinosaur links so she clicked on one. After a few minutes and hundreds of Dino sketches later, Courtney found a match to what Katie found, "No way. It's a dinosaur," Courtney said looking at the picture. "What's that?" Katie asked. "It's an animal that lives millions of years ago," Courtney replied, as she looked at the name, "This species is known as Leaellynasaura (LEE-ell-in-a-SORE-a)," she added. "That's to long. I'm gonna call her Lea," Katie said. "How do you know it's a girl?" Courtney asked looking at the child. "I can see it in her eyes," Katie replied smiling.
Courtney sighed, "Let's not tell anyone about her they might hurt her if word got out," Courtney said. "Thank you Courtney!" Katie hugged Courtney happily as the two trained the dinosaur to live in the house.
Katie saw the museum while the bus slows downs, she looked to see Lea poke her black head out of her backpack with her brown eyes taking in all the new sights her yellow underbelly shined in the sunlight, the white hidden under black strips and squares went all the way until they turned into black rings on her tail with the last five inches in all black, and her arms and legs going from white to light brown on her claws, but go from white, to light brown, to brown on her legs. "You ready, girl?" Katie asked. Lea bobbed her head in a nod. Katie slides out of the seat and carefully walks off the bus.
