“It was a dark and cold night when it all happened in Elkwood Montana. The mysterious death of the Baker twins.” Evan lights his face with a flashlight as he tells a story in his tree house.
“Neeeext,” groaned Milo, unwrapping the most undesirable candy and handing it to Evan.
“At least let me finish my story before telling me it is boring.” Pouted Evan, grabbing the bag of candy for more candy corn with a delighted smile.
“I can’t believe you like that. That candy is gross.” Squeezing his eyes and sticking out his tongue with disgust, made Evan eat his candy in front of Milo. It was 8:30 at night and the boys decided to knock on the door to receive an endless variety of candy. Trade them later or eat some on the way to other homes.
Climbing down the tree, right above his friend Milo, he hollered, “I’ll be back mom, Milo and I will go trick or treating now!” Rushing to get down as if he wanted to get more candy than his friend.
“Be careful out there and on the way back, the boogeyman could take you if you don’t come back home early.” Giggled his mom with no worry in the world.
“Are they still in the tree house?” Asked Nora.
“No, they are heading off to Bellville. Where the ‘rich’ people give out the ‘best’ candy. They always leave at his hour.” Replied Amelia.
As Nora and Amelia were having a fun talk, Evan and Milo headed to 302 Elkwood St. The famous scary maze that the owner always makes every year and never seem to fail to scare every kid on the block. Except for Evan. “Come on Milo, let’s go.” As they arrived at the garage, they grab some candy from the bowl and enter the maze. Spider webs, bats, and skeletons were roughly decorated, almost to make it seem that this place is haunted.
“Evan let’s go back. I’m scared.” Begged Milo with eye glistening with fear.
“Come on Milo, it’s all fake. I’ll tell you what. If you make it out without crying this year, I’ll give you half of my candy.” Evan smiled.
“No candy corn, right?” Asked Evan with a disgusted look on his face.
“Right.”
“Alright, deal.”
Right before they exit the maze, a man with a bloody bear mask and a chainsaw yelled at the boys telling them to run for their lives. Milo and the other kids screamed and ran off without Evan. Evan didn’t scream or cry, just made him laugh. Every year, he doesn’t cry. The man always questions why he never made Evan fear for his life.
“Evan, hurry up! I didn’t cry this time.” Yelled Milo.
“Bye, bye mister. I’ll come again next year. I hope you scare me next time.” As Evan ran back to Milo Dr. Weller says, “I always fail to scare you, you little twerp.” Said the man with an endearing face.
“Remember that promise? You owe me half of your candy tonight, Evan.”
“I know I know, a deal is a deal.”
After bickering about what is the worst candy in the world, they made it to a house where they give out the worst candy. Butterscotch, peanut brittle, and candy corn. All of Evans favorite candy.
“This is your favorite house, the house of number 999. The worst candy, even if it is in a rich neighborhood. You better not fill up that bag of that gross cand-”
“What?” Questioned Evan with the empty bowl already in his bag of candy.
“Never mind.” Milo rolled his eyes.
“I know, I’ll fill up half of my bag with my favorite candy and the other half of your favorite candy. Besides, we still have one more house left, the best for last.”
“You don’t mean?”
“Yup, Mr. Becker’s house.”
“But he is known for giving out candy to the kids he likes. He hates us. We broke his window with a baseball and never forgave us.”
“Don’t worry, he won’t recognize us, we have a costume. Let’s go.” Evan grabs onto Milo’s left hand with his right hand. Running before the candy runs out.
The clouds were clearing, and you could see the full moon, bright red like blood, lighting the streets to follow the path of Becker’s house. “Look we’re here, hurry before he runs out of candy.” Said Evan, pointing at Mr. Becker. Wearing an ugly Christmas sweater and a fake white beard.
“If you’re so worried about it running out, we could have gone sooner, rather than later.” Said Milo.
They walk up the porch with kids hoarding the front door. “Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat.” Yell the kids including Evan and Milo. When Mr. Becker opened the door, he saw a canvas of bright smiles glistening his heart with content.
“One for you, one for you, two for you, one for you, five for you.”
“See? Evan, five pieces of candy for that school bully and one piece for the girl scout girl from your grade.” Whispered Milo.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you one. Doesn’t matter which one, you like them all.”
“Trick or treat mister-”
“Shoo, get out. I don’t want you filthying my porch with your black fur.”
“Geez mister, it’s just a costume. A werewolf kid can’t harm ya.”
“I said, get out!” He slammed the door, not allowing Evan and Milo get a single treat from him.
Hearing the kids giggle made Milo upset and ran as fast as he could. “Hey, Milo. Wait up.” Before chasing him, he notices a Snicker unopened on the floor and takes it. Searching for him took him a while until he sees him running towards the dangerous busy road. Seeing him, run off to save a dog made Evan lose 60 years of his life.
Noticing the bright headlights and the honking scared Milo, making his legs feel heavy as a rock. Evan reached out to him and pulled him out of the way.
“Milo, are you crazy!?!? You almost gave me a heart attack.
“I’m sorry Evan, but, this dog was injured so I tried saving him. And, I’m sorry I ran off without you. I was just sad and mad for hearing mister butt face yelling at you.”
“Don’t worry, he may not like us but I’m here. That’s all you need.” Evan’s reassuring words put Milo at ease in a matter of seconds. “Here, a Snicker. You like it don’t you? I got it from mister Becker.” Evan said as he passed the Snicker to Milo.
“But how?”
“It fell on the floor when he was making a fool out of himself. So, I picked it up.”
After helping the dog, he slowly began to walk. Heading towards the opposite direction from Bellville. “Where are you going Biscuit?” Yelled Milo.
“Biscuit?” Evan smirked
“Yeah, Biscuit. Because his fur is the color of my grandma’s biscuits.”
“Are you sure you didn’t name him Biscuit because you like gran gran's biscuit?
“I’m sure! Hmph!” He pouted and turned his head to another way. “Wait up Biscuit, come on, let’s follow him.”
After a ten-minute walk that felt like an hour, they arrive at Bellville’s old grave.
“Hey, it’s mom and your mom.” Pointed Milo.
“Is that why you came here Biscuit? To take us to our moms?” Asked Evan
“Woof!”
“Good boy.” Evan rubbed Biscuit’s head. “Mom, I’m back.”
“Happy Halloween, my dear son.”
As Evan gets closer to his mother, he sees tears gently streaming down her face. “I have your favorite candy and treat. Smores with caramel and with a lot of love. “
“Thank you, mom, you are the best mom I could ever ask for. So please don’t cry.” Said Evan, hugging his mother. Smiling with content.
Evan and Milo hold hands and walk behind the two gravestones.
“Come on Milo, let’s go home.”
“See you soon mommy,” waved Milo.
“Until next Halloween, we’ll meet again.” Said both Evan and Milo.
After the two boys vanish quietly into the cold, thin air, Nora and Amelia replied, “See you again boys.”
