It's a modern take on the animals of the Chinese Zodiac after their fates were decided by the race. As the story goes...
Rat didn't wake Cat, so Cat missed the race and was excluded from the zodiac.
Rat won the race by catching a ride on Bull's ears, and leaping ahead of him to the Emperor. Then came Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon, who dazzled the Emperor with its charm. Snake didn't exactly "race" so much as claim he was the dragon's adopted son, thus securing himself a place as well.
Then came Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
