Now, there's something we need to clear: Hitting the other player with the ball is not exactly forbidden by the rules of the game. I mean, yes, you can't do it on purpose, but proving it was on purpose tends to be a bit complicated. Or tended to be, back when there were no cameras filming every possible angle of the game.
On the other hand, hitting a player with your fist is forbidden. Even if it's in self defense. However, one of the unwritten rules of the game (namely, not a real rule but one everyone knows) is that you don't let the other team disrespect you like this. Which is what makes pitch mound fights kind of common. (even if in the MLB they're trying to keep them down with new rules).
