As Charlotte left the carriage, O'Conner wished her a goodnight and promised that he would keep her updated as much as he could during the investigation. Charlotte thanked him just as the coach took off down the road. With a sigh, she turned and saw her sister's home.
Being married to a witch doctor certainly had its perks. They lived in a large home on the other side of town, but Charlotte believed that it was bigger than it needed to be. Lynn bragged about having seven bedrooms and the largest kitchen in Strathmore nearly every time they met. With a sigh, Charlotte realized that Lynn would probably give her the grand tour for the fifth time as well.
With a little hesitance, Charlotte walked up to the massive door and used the knocker. It wasn't long before Tyler came to the door, surprised to see her there early.
"Charlotte! Come on in," he greeted, recovering quickly from his surprise. Charlotte smiled as she walked inside. "Where are the other two?"
"They're on their way, I'm sure. I had to come early so I could discuss something with Lynn," she answered, looking passed him. "You are welcome to listen as well."
"What's it about?"
"Our parents. Where's Lynn?"
"Oh, in the kitchen," Tyler replied as he pointed. Charlotte started in that direction with Tyler following behind her. As she walked into the kitchen, Lynn looked up and beamed.
"Lottie!" Lynn smiled as she walked over. Charlotte grimaced as she hugged her sister. She hated that nickname, but didn't have the heart to tell Lynn. She liked the sound of 'Lynn and Lottie' a little too much.
"Hi, Lynn. I'm sorry, but could we take a moment to talk about something?" Charlotte wondered, getting straight to the point. Tyler took a seat at the small table in the corner.
"Of course," Lynn replied, her tone more serious. Charlotte took a deep breath. "What is it?"
"Well, I'm not sure how to start. Did you hear about a double murder today?"
"I can't say that I did."
"That's okay. Well, the Bureau wanted me to come onto the case, and-"
"Why did they need you on the case? Do you mean that they thought you were a suspect?"
"No, no, nothing like that. They thought I might have some insight," Charlotte answered. Lynn looked confused and tilted her head to the side. "The bodies were similarly, um, mutilated to Mom and Dad."
"That's not funny," Lynn whispered. Charlotte narrowed her eyes in irritation.
"Do you think this is something I would joke about? I was dragged down to the Bureau to have a discussion, and it was anything but pleasant. I thought that you should know, which is why I brought it up," Charlotte explained sternly. Lynn pursed her lips, not sure what to think.
"Do you think the murderer is back?" Lynn whispered. Charlotte shrugged.
"I can't say for sure, but it looks like it. The same message was written in blood," Charlotte sighed. Lynn shook her head.
"Do you think it's related to the religious extremist group?" Tyler commented.
"It could be. I have no idea who the killer is, or what they're like," Charlotte answered. "If I had to guess, I would guess that it's the same killer as before, and they're probably linked to the extremists."
"Are you going to continue working for the Bureau? On this case, I mean. Wait, did you go to the crime scene?" Lynn asked, piecing together Charlotte's story. She nodded.
"I want to make sure that the killer gets caught and goes away forever. I don't want to see more people die," Charlotte replied with a sigh. "And, yes, I did go to the crime scene. I insisted on it. I needed to make sure I knew all the facts."
"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
"No, but I don't want to sit on my hands and do nothing. That's something that I couldn't stand. Not after what the killer did to our family."
"That was over ten years ago."
"And people are still dying," Charlotte reminded harshly. Lynn took a deep breath and shook her head.
"Just be careful, okay? I can't stand to lose anyone else."
"I'll be safe. I just want to keep up on the case. I don't want to directly investigate unless the Bureau thinks that it's a good idea," Charlotte promised.
"Alright, that's fine. I'm just worried that the killer might try to come after you."
"I doubt that. I'm barely involved. I'm sure the press is going to get wind of this rather soon. It'll be all over Strathmore soon."
"I guess that's true. I don't think you should tell anyone else of your involvement," Lynn warned.
"I agree, it will be a need to know basis. I just felt that this involved both of us."
"Fair enough. It'll be nice to know that whoever killed Mom and Dad will be get what's coming to them," Lynn agreed before she walked back towards the counter. "We should talk about this later, though. Where are your students anyway?"
"They should be here soon. I told them to head over without me, since I had to go with the Bureau. I wasn't sure if I was going to help them close," Charlotte answered, sitting down on a stool.
"I wouldn't tell them about the killer."
"If they bring it up, I'm not going to lie to them. I would trust both of them with my life. I trust them just as much as I trust you. Besides, this does involve them. They deserve to know the truth."
Lynn didn't say anything in return as they sat in silence. Tyler stood up and walked into the next room, the tension growing too much for him. Charlotte wondered if this was the right time to talk about this, or if she should have waited.
"What is for dinner?" Charlotte wondered, finally breaking the silence. Lynn glanced back at her and smiled.
"I'm making pot roast, just like Mom used to make," Lynn informed as Charlotte grinned widely.
"That's going to be delicious. How'd you get the recipe?"
"Trial and error mostly. I've been working on it for a few weeks now," Lynn winked. The door opened and closed as loud footsteps made their way to the kitchen. Victoria stomped in and stared at both the sisters.
"And which one you were going to tell me about the Witch Slayer?" Victoria demanded, leaving the other two dumbstruck.
