Obviously that marked the end of our evening and as we got outside accompanied by the Beauforts despite all odds the couple maintained the façade of unity and calm. We reached our car only to be met by another limo outstretched right next to us as the twins walked over carrying two Yves Saint Laurent duffle bags each.
“Where do you think you’re going?” their dad bellowed and weirdly enough he didn’t even seem that worried. It was as if fights and outbursts like this were the norm for the family.
“A hotel.” Conrad replied not even stopping in respect.
Their mother worried “It’s the weekend I happen to know you won’t get a room let alone a suit. So come back inside we’ll sort..”
Cordelier cut her “Don’t worry about us we’ll probably just crash with a friend.”
Back and forth they argued and from both points the twins were bound to be stranded in the cold if they left their estate.
Mom couldn’t leave well enough alone so she scooted closer to dad and whispered something in his ear away from Tess and I. When they came back they suggested to the Beauforts to let the twins stay over at our house.
After some more back and forth arguing even the twins realized that was their best bet at not sleeping under the tense roof or the moonlight. So they came with.
Tess was a multi-tasking machine; she'd woken up earlier than mom who's always woken up earlier than dad even during campaign season. And despite the maids’ efforts to stop her she'd prepared everyone's, well the twins' really, breakfast which she ordered be hand delivered by the maids to the twins’ room. All the while on a conference call with office she was doing an internship at.
By the time I came down to help she'd already moved on to skimming Vogue whilst texting her needy boyfriend and best friend whilst eating.
"You should focus on one thing Tess unless overeating is your prerogative." I said dumping my plate in the sink.
Tess flinched looking down at her plate with a frown then pushed it aside as she switched her phone screen off swirling around in her adjustable chair to face me "so is Conrad up yet?"
"No, but why do you want to know?" I asked back
"He's gay are you not as intrigued as I am?" She inquired
"Nope, definitely not." I lied in truth I was dying to find out more about him.
"You know Emma from my senior year right?" She asked and my silence made it obvious I didn't know which of her many high school friends or arch nemesis she was. She made descriptive hand gestures "about this tall, pretty, black, thinks she's gangster but wears Chanel?" And just like that I knew which friend she was. She was the most boy crazy of the bunch. Tess smiled and "she's gonna flip when I tell her. She had a serious crush on Conrad." Tess sighed nostalgically "it hasn't been that long but I miss high school already."
"I'm not that surprised over Cordelier though, I saw her kiss a girl once but I pinned it to just being curious or experimental." Wanting to shift the conversation from Conrad I gave my gossip girl of a sister good bait.
"You know she was two grades below me and the guys my age at your school always used to go in a frenzy over her. I mean she looks like that." She snickered almost bitterly "but we had our suspicions and she wouldn't play spin the bottle even though everyone else in the dorm did." Tess snickered and her face lit up "OhmyGod."
"Not quite"
"I'm seeing Emily anyway this week let me call her and catch her up." She picked up her phone then her eyes fell on me whispering "wait you share the same dorm with Conrad. Did you already know and just chose not to tell me? Your beloved sister and strong lgbt ally?"
“I didn't know, like if I'm being honest he's that dark haired guy I've been crushing on since freshman year remember? But ... but ... wow would've never suspected." I whispered back
After some teasing from my big sister she eventually asked something that had come up on my mind all night "You're single, you like him, and he likes guys ask him out."
