The teenagers have settled in the sand with their demons when we arrive at the group. I stay on my feet, kind of anxious about what to expect, and my demon follows my example, right by my side.
I notice how the smaller demons pay close attention to keeping their distance from Sarah. It makes me wonder if he sends some kind of signal to do just that; or if they are naturally intimidated.
"So what´s the deal with this?", I finally ask into the awkward silence, “What are we going to do here now?”
The instructor gives me a small lipped smile.
"This area gives you the chance to get to know your demons better. We´ll also be able to sort you into your correct groups, when necessary. "
I hesitate. This is the first time I hear about a distinction between the groups themselves.
"And what do you sort them by?"
The scholar is obviously irritated by my array of questions and sighs annoyed. The glares of the other students make me feel anxious, but I keep standing; and somehow, Sarazeels presence right next to me makes me feel more confident.
“We sort you by your demons strengths and abilities.”, he finally decides to go along with my demand for answers. “This is by no means a contest for the “Best”, we just want to give everyone the right education that is necessary for them and their demon. Would you please sit down like everyone else, Kara?”
So that is exactly what it is. They are filtering for the strongest Demons. I sigh, and make my way over to Peter, who is already sitting in the dirt, when suddenly all of the heads swing around.
I follow their gaze and see another group of teenagers entering the square. All of them are wearing a dark uniform and are led trough the sand-pit by my father. The demons walking alongside them are different from the ones in our circle. They are big and bulky, all of them in their human form.
I feel Sarah tense up next to me. Their Aura is intimidating and scary, but only seems to rile him up.
I take a deep breath when they come closer to us, apparently just passing through.
With chills down my back, I notice how more and more of them stare at my demon and start to make inhuman noises. Nobody even dares to say a thing. I look up to Sarazeel, who challenges their gazes, and then slowly raises the corner of his mouth to show them his teeth.
Now I am reminded how much I don´t know about this demon. How dangerous he really is.
My Father pretends not to notice, but the stronger demons are much less reluctantly following their masters, until they are right across from me and my group. Then one of them stops completely and just growls at Sarazeel.
I make a step back and almost crash into my huddling Demon. He seems completely oblivious to my fear, just leans down to me and whispers into my ear, so loudly that everyone can hear it
“They are weak.”
