Thanking them and showing some manners first we followed Mr. Jones the butler out of the room just as mom sighed and asked "and the twins it's been forever how are they?" I never got to hear the reply instead I paid attention to the knot that was in my stomach making me feel small again and so self conscious I mean I was barely roommates with Conrad let alone friends with him, our activities were so far apart and different where I liked to rest he liked sneaking out to the girls' house in the middle of the night and where I preferred to be cordial and nice to people he seemed so set on being feared or hated either way he didn't care, he was a bustard who had it all.
Born into wealth, old money stretching over sixteen generations of Beauforts and I was born out of a household where we earned every excess penny and a spot on 'the Forbes rich list' is literally celebrated. Where his parents were the ever happy, model couple my parents were not and had almost split when tried to run for senate office two years ago and had to forfeit due to a comment mom had made on a talk show years earlier in her modeling career back when she had no one advising her on how and what not to say in public or ever. Even our friends were different.
I had no idea how we would last the day on foreign territory considering we were polar opposites and I knew Tess wouldn't be of help to me as she could choose to befriend the female Beaufort twin or waste her day away facetiming her boyfriend. Either way nothing looked bright for me.
Mr. Jones was ringed; he checked his phone and politely pointed towards the other end of the hall "I'm sorry I have to attend to this." He held up his phone to us and with a finger pointed outside "they left the wing a while ago, but straight ahead, there, in the cabaña you'll find them. I'm sorry again." And with that he left us. Tess hung her bony arm around mine as we followed the directions.
"See what I see?" I agreed with a grin.
It was a bougie cabaña with two very hot bartenders fit enough to walk for Calvin Klein flipping bottles behind a bar in chatter as were Conrad and two other boys that looked like twins and familiar maybe around school I thought. Cordelier was also sat with them with a phone pressed against her ear she got up to walk away from the music distance. Our pace slowed down a little, this was foreign land with people who weren't our friends anyway.
'Ugh" Tess complained with a hard eye roll.
'What is it?" I asked
She tried to grimace but her face too beautiful to give off the desired effect she further complained "that bitch is wearing jogger pants and a flannel shirt."
"And if it wasn't for mom you would have shown up here in your own sweatpants and a cropped sweater, remember Tess?"
"She paired that with Prada sneakers and those joggers are Ivy Park. Look." She head gestured
Right on cue Cordelier ran back to where she was sat grabbing her bag searching for something. This gave something for Tess to add "Oh and look, that purse is Celine and it isn't even out yet, my friend from high school is a merchandiser at the Celine store so I know."
I let out a chuckle choosing to sweep my gaze over to the other twin instead. He was sat in a pair of identical joggers to his twin sister, a drink in front of him laughing away at his friends' stories as they all sat with unbuttoned shirts their torsos for the show. And again I wondered how I was going to even try to fit in.
"So which of the five do you think is fit?" Tess winked at me suggestively I laughed avoiding to answer
She was clever "No really, which one? Personally I think the raven haired bartender could get it." She fixed her décolletage like a lady but spoke like anything but "OhmyGod! Tess! You have a fiancé"
"And if I didn't I would ravish the hot bartender on the left." She freed her arm to flatten her dress.
I traced my gaze back to Conrad and giving in to temptation I flickered to the bartenders to see if Tess was right, her taste in guys was almost perfect after all.
"Go order a hot bartender" a soft, sweet voice spoke playfully from behind us.
Startled by Cordelier my eyes widened. She was walking right beside us on my left with Tess on my right. She nodded towards the bar and spoke again "Go order a hot bartender, its flirty enough to drive the conversation where you want to take it."
She was looking at me.
