When the ship sailed to sea
One sunny, autumn day
A girl watched it leave
With nary a tear in her eye
She'd been waiting to go
For her entire, dreary life
But it'd left without her
And she'd never felt so betrayed
So she jumped into the ocean
Nothing with her at all
She swam to the vessal mighty
And clambered aboard, soaked.
The captain eyed her sternly
She wasn't exactly well-clad
And what with having swum there
She didn't have money for passage
He asked the first-mate with disinterest
Why is she here? Do you happen to know?
The first mate knew her, that was sure
Because her anger was visible by everyone
The first mate said, I know not who she is
But I'd have thought you would.
For is she not the lady you took
The money for her passage aboard?
The captain thought for a long long time
He looked and he looked and he looked.
But still, his memory failed him
He couldn't recall her whatsoever.
Finally, with a sense of dread, the girl said
I served you dinner last night in your room
Despite my own misgivings and gloom
I gave you dinner, and you gave me passage here
But, you left this morning without me aboard
So I swam here to confront you directly
Now do you remember my name, you thief?
She asked with scorn in her voice
The captain thought again for a while
And then he said with a smirk
I do remember you m'dear
Although your name has escaped me for now
The girl gritted her teeth and growled
My name is Flores, you flirt
You tried to use me to satisfy your needs
And I refused, with little grace
I'm only here because your ship
Was the first one to ever arrive
That stayed for more than a day
That I could leave on in haste
So, let me stay and give me food
For that is what I paid for last night
With my own body, which won't happen again,
So you'd better give me good recompense
The captain had no choice, so he replied
Why certainly, dear, have some food!
However, you must fight over bedding
Along with the cabin boys
The girl had no choice. She had to accept.
Otherwise, the captain would throw her out to sea
By now the harbor was long gone from view
So, on her way to the promised land, she sat and enjoyed the ride.
