“What happened?” I wondered, staring at my phone again for the 5th time this morning. I still couldn’t believe I was going on a date with some mystery girl that I had only just met yesterday. Some would call it love at first sight, but honestly, I don’t believe in that bullshit. How high must the odds be for two people to be single and “ready to mingle” at the exact same time and they just happen to lock eyes. Suddenly, they are dating, getting married, and living happily ever after. Again, BS. Yet, for some reason, my heart told me that Samena is going to be more than just a friend.
As I got ready, I noticed myself getting a bit more dressed up than usual. I had planned for us to go walking down the abandoned part of the amusement park, so all that required was some walking shoes. However, I was putting on shorts that I made sure looked good, a nice, clean shirt, and even a bit of makeup. I guess I just wanted to look better than normal, but that was unusual for me. After packing a picnic lunch for us, some water bottles, a blanket, and my phone, I was on my way to the park at 9:50. I hoped that she wouldn’t be there yet so I had some time to prepare, but as it turns out, she was already on top of that.
I saw her standing in the empty park talking to herself. She didn’t notice me as I got closer so I could hear what she was saying.
“Hi Jaime, its good to see you again! No...Sup girl? No that’s not right...You are looking snazzy today! Ugh, why am I so nervous?”
I laughed quietly at her conversation. It seemed she was as anxious as I was. There was no use just standing there though, so I started walking up.
“Hey Samena!” I said cheerfully.
She looked at me, startled. “Oh h-hey! Sorry I’m early.”
“Its fine, I just didn’t expect to see you here yet.” I replied, smiling.
“Oh ya... of course.” She said before looking out at the park. “So, why are we here at a closed amusement park?”
I smiled at her. “We are going to go on an adventure.”
“Ooh fun! And I see you brought some supplies.” She replied, almost as giddy as I was.
“Ha yup. I was thinking we could have a little picnic lunch before we went our separate ways.”
“Sounds good to me!”
Not knowing what to say next, we just stood there awkwardly looking at each other. She was wearing a black t-shirt with the Triforce from the Legend of Zelda on it, shorts, some blue flip flops, and she had her hair up. I suddenly felt comfortable with my choice of clothes, seeing as she had exactly what I had in mind as well.
I finally took a deep breath and asked “shall we get started?” Samena smiled and nodded. As we began our walk, I fought back the strong urge to hold her hand. I don’t why I felt this, but it just seemed right at the moment. I fought it back, however, out of fear that it was too soon, or that she would completely and utterly reject me. The second one was, of course, a little irrational, but what can I say? I’m so FREAKING NERVOUS.
As I looked over at Samena, she looked completely calm, like she had been on a million dates before. I certainly haven’t. Probably one or two, but I just never found someone I wanted to really hang out with for more than an hour. However, I was curious, so I asked, “Is this your first date?” She looked at me, flustered. “Umm...hah yes..it is.” She responded, her voice shaky.
“W-what about you?” She asked.
“I’ve only been one one or two. Something like that.” I shrugged.
“Ah...are they normally this awkward?” she asked, laughing.
“Ha usually. You will get used to it soon enough though.”
She smiled at me. “I think I am getting used to it...slowly but surely”
After walking for about 30 minutes, we finally reached our destination: the old merry-go-round. I couldn’t wait for what was going to happen next…
