I sat quietly in the corner with my glass of Perrier water waiting for Heidi.
Don't focus on why I'm not having Rum and Coke or some Brandy considering I'm in the most elite bar downtown...let's save that story for later.
She was twenty minutes late and it already felt like a century. She had promised to show up for our girls' night out. We both needed to relax and seriously catch up.
"Hahahaha!"
Their laughter grew louder and more out of control as the minutes passed by. They were seated three cocktail tables away from me. Three men, all in suits. I tried not to pay attention to them but they seemed to suck the whole room in, making what they did very noticeable.
How do I put this...imagine you're out, sadly alone waiting for your high school bestie who's left you to fend for yourself and, in the middle of the room is a trio of really fine looking office men, still in suits, drinking, laughing and not giving a rat's ass about those around them simply because it's Friday and they are out to have a nice time. No one can blame them, it's a free world. They keep glancing over at your table and clearly spot you sipping freaking Perrier water but, you need to play it cool since, you are cool and expecting someone who should seriously just show up any minute!
So, there you have it. I was having an awkward evening in a fancy bar with very hot dudes around and I was being such a tightass with a bottle of Perrier water. Who drinks water in a bar?? Should bars even serve water??
"Kathleen, so sorry I'm late!" Heidi said, making her way towards my table, her British accent distinct as her tone showed she was deeply sorry.
"Got lost walking through the mall again?" I asked kissing her on the cheek.
"Oh, stop it! You know I try not to walk into more than three stores," she said beaming, holding up a small pink gift bag.
"And what is it this time...another pair of earrings?" I deadpanned.
"Don't be silly and accept it! At least I shower you with gifts whenever we meet unlike..."
"Wow-" I cut her mid-sentence my face lighting up. "It's beautiful."
"They had it on sale and I thought it would go wonderfully with anything you wear. Plus, I had them add some writings to it."
I stared at the infinity chain and squinted a little to read the engraved letters Wild Bird. She always called me that back in high school and still did in secret when no one was around.
"You shouldn't have," I said placing it back into the velvet black box.
"I want you to always remember who you truly are," Heidi said. "And for infinity." We both broke into light chuckles and I slipped the gift into my backpack.
"Excuse me ladies," we both turned and faced Matt, "From the gentlemen at table 7." He said and carefully placed two glasses on the table.
Heidi and I looked towards the table he pointed out and guess what...don't even guess, you already figured it out. The Suits were holding up their glasses towards us and were all smiles.
