When he left is when I realized of how close we had been, if anyone had seen they would’ve thought we were good friends and had my friends seen they would’ve thought we were screwing. I followed behind him and right then my phone buzzed with a text. I wanted to check it but I also knew it was only dad probably wanting to make a phone date with me for the congratulatory call but also with Conrad in the leading and peering over to look behind at me I became really self conscious of taking my phone out and left it burning my pocket. Figuring I’d prefer to check it in class than here with him...
A whole day of more classes and dinner later we were I was sat in my class for late study when Mr. Baggins our late study patron for the study received a call that was too loud, evidently he didn’t know how to reduce his volume so the poor man walked around frantically trotting for the door hunched over like my cousin Perry when he peers over to raid his parents liquor cabinet. A paper note reached the back of my neck, miffed at the inconvenience this must’ve done to my hair I picked up the ten folded note to read it and it read “Cyrus has a crush on you” boldly and rather if I may be honest rudely I tore up the note and got up to throw it in the bin.
After the late studying me and the fellow prefects went around the dorms checking on our assigned rooms to check and make sure everyone was behaving before lights out.
On our way back that we were trailing very slowly in conversation. Preston brought up a subject I’d been very interested in. The next year’s headboy position. “I heard they’re starting out the recruitment.” He announced and Greg who was very much vying for head boy much more than I was stopped and in a apanicked tone asked “your dad told you that?” we all turned to look to Preston for an answer we would trust as he was the son of the dean of admissions and usually he knew things and decisions that would be made for us before we were made aware of them. He was our personal BBC news. Preston laughed and mimicked Greg with a higher pitched annoying voice “your dad told you that?” he snorted slapping Grey on his shoulder and said “No. Ofcourse not but he left a tab open on his ipad which had questions for the headboy interview.” I feinged nonchalance and hoped I only pulled it off just as I was imagining I was and asked “well what did the questions say?” Grey furrowed his brows paying attention to Preston as the other guys kept on walking ahead of us “Well I didn’t see all of them they were many.” He pulled his iphone out for a picture and showed it to us.
With Greg hogging my entire left side to read everything himself we both summed up to the same conclusion. The were already starting to determine the next head boy this early in the year and although I knew I had it in my pocket Greg made fierce completion being a sportsman, academic man, well respected by grades below and above. He was awful at public speaking and as a leader his qualities were up for debate as people only did what he said out of fear. Much our current head boy who was also his role model.
Greg dropped the phone into Preston’s chest “This is nothing I got this, you just wasted my time you wanker.” Preston saved his phone from falling and without taking eyes from it as he inspected it he retorted “I heard dad on a call talking with the senior teacher about you two are tied and the tie breaker will come from the rest of the other prefects, senior prefects and headboy.” He paused and put his phone back into his pocket then finished looking at me “You’re roommates with Conrad and Lekan right?” Greg scoffed “So? They’re not friends.”
They both looked to me and I put my hands up swaying them in the air “and all I want is a good yeasr not new friends.”
“You know those two have Evan and the rest of the prefects in their pockets right?” Preston reasoned and Greg said “I’m closer to his dorm mates than he is to them. Like I said I got this.” He smacked Preston on the back of his head and left with a slight jog catching up with the others who were going in his direction.Preston gathered himself following behind Greg in similar fashion and with a short distance between us he turned jogging in reverse and saluted me saying “You’re a good guy Liam but good guys don’t make history…keep that in mind.” Then off he went.
