Mammon stepped towards the gate with Michael right behind him. Once they stood in front of it they turned to the group of four. The guards had gone back to their posts.
“We will have you know that Mammon and I have been working on the same mission for many many years.” Michael started, folding his arms. His face was serious, he was not trying to mock them. “This is a dangerous and exhausting business.” He continued while shifting his feet. Mammon brushed his long black hair out of his face and looked almost worried.
“The fact that the higher-ups have actually decided to make a larger group, means it is getting more serious.” He exclaimed, frowning. He looked each of the four standing before him in the eyes and sighed.
“You will most likely come across more teams that are already out in the worlds and moons to try and get rid of the threat.” Michael said while also taking in the faces in front of him.
“You are all still young, but already strong enough, but please....” Mammon started. “Look after yourselves and each other.”
Pain frowned.
“That coming from you, gives me shivers, Mammon, you, of all people, are telling us to take care of each other.” Pain grinned, but it was a worried grin. Mammon looked him in the eyes and nodded.
“Did anyone tell you yet what you will be fighting?” Michael asked. The group slowly shook their heads. They were nervous now. Even Pain felt uneasy. Michael sighed and looked like he was thinking hard about how he should explain what is happening.
“As you all know there is a darkness spreading over the many different worlds, even their moons and some of the suns.
We are chasing this darkness. It is a darkness no one has ever seen before. Darker than the darkest shadows of the place you know now as ‘home’” He started while gesturing to Scare and Pain.
“This darkness is something created by the court higher than our own Lords.
The worlds after this world, is where it originates from.” Mammon continued.
“A place we do not even know ourselves.” Sighed Michael.
“However it somehow seeped through the tiny cracks between our worlds and its own.
Now it is terrorising the worlds that we came from and it is multiplying rapidly.”
“Like I said we have been fighting against this threat for many many years, even with other teams it seems impossible to destroy the creatures that have grown from the multiplying fast enough.”
“However…” Mammon took a deep breath. “We have reasons to believe that there is a ‘mother’ hiding somewhere.”
The four glanced at each other then back at Michael and Mammon.
“A mother?” Hope uttered softly and clearly confused. Mammon nodded.
“A ‘Mother’.” He affirmed. “Well, of course not a literal mother, but the ‘mother’ creature.”
“What Mammon means it is what all the smaller ones, that we have been fighting so far, originate from.” Michael explained. “We thought, until now, that they all kept coming through the cracks of the higher and lower worlds, but apparently this is not the case.”
They grew silent for a little while. The four took a moment to take all this in.
“So…” Scare started. “The ‘mother’ is somewhere in the different worlds, hiding and producing… babies…”
Michael and Mammon nodded.
“So are we to find the mother and leave the… babies…?” Health asked, he was still confused by all this.
“No, you are to both fight the… smaller ones… and find out more about the whereabouts of the ‘Mother’.” Mammon explained.
“Do they have a name they go by...other than...creatures of the darkness or whatever?” Pain tried to get more information, but he already knew that there was not more to it.
“Well…” Mammon started, his face lit up a bit as if he was amused. Michael seemed annoyed, but said nothing. “We started with calling them dark blobs and whatnot.”
Scare snickered.
“But, now we are calling them Seraphims.” Mammon grinned. The four fell silent again. Michael clicked his tongue.
“Seraphim, why did you call monster of a pure darkness after a holy rank?” Health stuttered, confused and slightly offended.
“Well, we started calling them archangels at first as a joke.” Mammon explained, he was now clearly amused. “But we got a bit confused over the matter, since some of us, including me, were teamed up with actual archangels.” He gestured to Michael. Michael still didn’t say anything.
“So we decided on Seraphims and the higher-ups caught on quickly, so it stayed that way.” Mammon finished.
“But isn’t that confusing still, as it is a holy rank?” Hope asked softly. Michael looked at her.
“There haven’t been any Seraphims in our holy ranks for centuries, so the higher-ups thought it would be befitting.” Michael exclaimed, but mumbled: “For whatever reason.”
“Anyhow… it is high time we get you on your way down.” Mammon sighed. The four were uneasy and still felt like they had many questions. However, their questions would be left unanswered as it seemed like there simply were no such answers yet. They would have to go and find out for themselves.
