What was with that Scav? You’d think we’d met before the way he looked at me. He did feel familiar but I’d remember someone with that much hair. I can’t believe I told him my name too, I could have kept that information to myself.
Thinking Demons have the same rights in death as humans do too, he didn’t know me but he knew exactly what to do to irritate me. If his father wasn’t the director of the Carrion I would have thought he wasn’t human. Not with his thin tall build, or his enormous steel grey eyes that were reminiscent of my gun. I almost knocked my glasses off when I shook my head.
“What are you thinking about?” Conner asked.
“Scavs have to go through the same tests as Militia do, right?” I knew it wasn’t a possibility, but I had to ask.
“Almost, Scavengers don’t get the same shots as you guys do. In fact, they don’t get any at all, those kids are naturally talented at what they do. You are too, but you’re out there fighting and without those shots you’d most likely die.” Conner shrugged, getting right to the point like always. “Why do you ask?”
“It’s that one Scav.” I think he’s a Demon.
“You mean Luke’s son, Rune?” Conner smiled. “He’s a strange kid alright, but he has to go through all the same tests. Don’t be so paranoid, it’s not good for you.” He winked.
I sighed. Conner was right on one thing; the tests are designed to weed out Demons. Blood tests especially since they either bled lava or water. But he was wrong on the paranoid part, that’s saved me more than once even if it meant accidentally hurting a civilian.
I didn’t believe him either. That Scav may not be a Demon, but he is hiding something. I paused on the cobblestone walkway and looked back. Speaking of being paranoid, I feel like I’m being followed.
“Riley.” Conner called to me from a few feet ahead. “Let’s go. Lagging behind isn’t going to get you out of your session.”
Damn, my session. I’d almost forgot about it and hoped Conner did too with this distraction. “I’m coming.” I lightly jogged to where he was.
The walk back to HQ wasn’t bad, it’s nice when the weather is controlled and it’s always comfortable. The Militia have buildings all over the city, so ours are much smaller than the Carrion. I don’t spend much time in the others, they're mostly for office work, so it’s either HQ or the barracks.
There was a large car parked out front with a few private Militia standing around it. A silver emblem of a wolf surrounded by lilies adorned the hood of the car and the doors.
Great. Today is testing my patience.
“I’ll be right in.” I took a turn to walk around the block.
“I don’t think so.” Conner caught me by my collar. “You fight Demons, I’m sure you can deal with your Ex.” He grinned.
“Isaac is worse than any Demon.” I groaned. “I’m allowed to kill those.”
Conner choked on a chuckle as he opened the door and Isaac Wolfe, son of our Lord Regent, stood in the waiting room with more private Militia.
Isaac smiled at me, a thin closed smile that meant he didn’t mean it.
