The nurse opened the door the rest of the way and continued down the hall, supposedly to give her some privacy. Kyra walked into the room. It was so silent; the only sounds were slow breaths and beeps from the equipment. She paused again, not wanting to disturb Edward, but he opened his eyes and looked at her from across the room. His face held a confused expression.
She walked up to the bed, “Hi, you don’t know me but we kind of met last night. I was on my way home from a party, you were in a dumpster. It was a really awkward meeting.” She laughed nervously, knowing she sounded like a complete creep. She looked for any sign of understanding, but he still just looked confused. “Sorry, this is just a weird situation. I found you last night, in the dumpster, after you had been attacked.”
His expression cleared. “You’re Kyra then? The doctor told me that you found me in the dumpster.” “Yeah, that was me. Um, I was just walking by and heard you groan and looked in the dumpster and there you were. So, yeah.”
“Well thanks for looking. I know a lot of people who would have been too freaked out to look or wouldn’t have bothered or wouldn’t have even noticed. I guess I could have died if you hadn’t investigated.” He looked down for a moment. What an awkward conversation, talking about almost dying.
“So, do you remember what happened? Like, who attacked you and why? I don’t mean to pry really, but I am just a really curious person by nature.”
“I don’t mind you asking, but I don’t actually remember anything. I don’t even remember going into the alley or anything. Last I knew, I was walking down the road that the alley intersects. I wish I knew what happened. Why would someone slash my throat open like that? Who on earth did I get so angry to do that? I feel like if it was a mugging, they wouldn’t have taken the time to do that, just shanked me, you know? Also, my wallet and phone weren’t missing. Why would someone do this to me?” Edward looked frustrated and confused. Kyra sympathized with him. Nobody could blame him for wondering why someone had done that to him.
Kyra’s stomach rumbled. “I’m a little hungry. Can I get anything for you?” Kyra tried to break the tension and the just slightly melancholy mood.
“Sure, something really soft. My throat is a little sore.”
“What? Why would it be sore? Did it get slashed or something strange like that?” Kyra received a slight smile at that. “I’m actually kind of surprised that you’re speaking so well.”
“I guess that the wound was actually pretty superficial. The doctor just told me to take it easy if I feel like I need to. So far, it’s been fine.”
“Well let me go and get some food from the cafeteria. I’ll be right back.”
