Even with the strange weight in my pocket I smiled. Brooke had been Simon's rock for the past year, we’d been friends longer but at some point, they became more then friends. It wasn’t a surprise and it didn’t make our friendship awkward. It felt like a natural change.
I’ve never felt that way, it’s tough to find a relationship with the same species when we’re all hiding or hunted. I also haven’t really had an interest in looking either.
The door buzzed and instead of opening another metal grate slid down to prevent us from leaving.
“Heh, whoops.” Simon smiled grimly.
Looks like we’re getting caught now. There weren’t any other exits from the training room, and after the secondary door locking us out we gave up. Better to own up to our choices now than to hide them and get in more trouble later.
“If this wasn’t how we were going to spend the next hour or so, what were you two up to tonight?” I asked.
“Simon and I have a date tonight, we’re pooling our savings together and getting some food from that fancy place in the upper city.” Brooke pulled Simon close.
I’ve never been on a date, but I’ve done lots of things with Simon that led to Carlos asking me if we were dating. Which would also never be a possibility, Simon is more of a sister than just a friend.
“Which means, I’m paying for a fancy place in the upper city.” Simon corrected. “What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to go out too, but it’s a less glamorous night for me.” That’s not true, I didn’t need to go to some place fancy to see something beautiful.
“Ah I see, it's a house calls with Carlos night.” Brooke nodded. “Don’t be late to our first day on the job tomorrow.”
“Me, late? I should be saying that to you.” I slid down the wall and sat on the floor. “Who was it that almost missed their placement test yesterday?”
“He’s got you there.” Simon chuckled.
“Hey, you’d be surprised how much more comfortable a bed becomes when there’s someone else in it with you.” Brooked huffed.
Simon turned away, but I saw the blush flooding her face. They’d been dating for awhile but no matter how long it had been, Simon’s cheeks lit up with rose whenever Brooke talked about their relationship.
We sat there for what must have been a couple hours. We talked about our placement tests and tried to think of where our first hunt would be. Brooke spoke about the rumors of missing Scavengers, mostly Leviathans, that had disappeared under mysterious circumstances. I felt like a kid around a campfire listening to scary stories, except these were all too real. Rumor or not, Scavengers went missing or were just killed in the field all the time. Which is a major reason why I’m happy we’re on a team together. Where we can trust each other one hundred percent without any doubts.
Our lighthearted banter came to a sudden stop when we heard the gate rise, and the door unlock. We snapped our attention to the door, and if we were smarter we probably would have tried to hide. Instead we stayed put and waited.
