“What is it?” Brooke leaned over the edge.
“I don’t know.” A small black shard, no bigger than the palm of my hand fell from her grip into my hand. “Some kind of glass I think.”
It felt unnaturally cold as it was black. I flipped it around in my fingers, and when I caught my reflection I dropped it.
I ran my hands over my face.
I’m still human.
My reflection was not.
The little shard chipped a small piece off. I shoved what was left in to my pocket, leaving the tiny broken piece on the floor of the pool.
“What happened?” Simon yelled.
“I…” I bit at my cheek. I’d tell her later, but Brooke didn’t know about me and I couldn’t risk it. “I dropped it, it broke.”
I winced at yet another lie. My gut sank at the feeling but it’s for the best, like it always was with Brooke. Her father is in charge of managing every active Militia soldier and Scavenger, I couldn’t risk exposure like that. Even if she was a friend.
Luke already had enough on his plate. Between explaining some of my strange behavior, like never being seen eating, and now trying to come up with a good reason that my diving time was the best any human has ever done. I couldn’t give him another thing to worry about.
Simon helped me out of the empty pool. The announcement had stopped and the three of us were probably the only ones left inside.
Like always, the only ones breaking the rules.
“Let’s get out of here.” Brooke suggested.
“Good idea.” Simon agreed and followed her to the door.
The lightweight glass felt so heavy in my pocket, like it was begging for attention, to be held again. I knew we would potentially find some odd stuff once we started actual Scavenge hunts but, I didn’t think I’d find something so bizarre before even stepping foot in the field. Maybe I should ask Carlos about it later, he’s probably the only human who knows about Lunite culture.
For now, I did my best to ignore it.
I heard the doors jostle against their hinges. “Well we might have a slight problem with leaving.” Brooke tried the doors again. She was the strongest out of the three of us so if she couldn’t open it I doubt Simon or I could.
“They must be on a magnetic lock in case of a breach like this one. I can try to get it open.” Simon took a small tool kit off her belt and knelt next to the panel to the side of the door. “Does this count as breaking and entering? Or breaking and exiting.”
“Whatever it is, we can’t get in trouble for it if we don’t get caught, now can we?” Brooke ran her hand up and down Simon's back.
